The case is back up for debate. He increased the budget to 1350 so that's probably what will be switched. He is younger and really wants a window

I love when ppl purchase great PSUs for new builds.

I've been out of the building game for so long I can't tell if this is sarcasm or you really love it when people don't cheap out on the PSU lol

he is being serious. PSU is the most important part since if it blows out it can take every single component with it.

new cases:
rosewill blackhawk $80
fractal design r4 $120

both are highly rated, have cable management, usb 3.0, and bottom mounted PSUs.

Highly rated and 99 bucks

Correct.

ETA:

I have been stuck trying to trouble shoot my own PC without a tester years ago. Learned a lot about not being cheap on PSUs and having a rail go out.

I'm in love with 2 Lian-Li cases ATM.

1 for my new server and 1 for maybe a new HTPC for the bedroom. Waiting for them to go back in stock though.

i had a computer come in one day that would shut itself off if you put a cd in the cd player.
after hours of pulling my hair out i discovered the PSU was too weak to run the fricking laser!

I use this tester now

but did use this one for awhile before I purchased the one above. I got the one below on sale for under 10 bucks on a sale. It is worth it for any PC builder to have. Even if you build 1 system every 2yrs. Something can always go wrong.

yeah we need to get a new one. the one i currently use is fine (its analog) but it isnt sensitive enough for the small problems. for example, it passed the psu in the CD player situation.
eta: here is the one i currently use LINK

So the comment about upgrading the GPU is bothering me still.. From the reviews, it seemed the 660ti played smooth on max settings for even FarCry 3. Is a better GPU worth it?

Don't need such an expensive mobo either. Grab the gigabyte up4, a 1tb 7200rpm drive and bump the video card up to a 7970ghz or 680

Edit- didn't see your second build. But still get a cheaper mobo and bump the video card up

you are currently listing a 660ti 3GB model for $300
your next cheapest upgrade option without giving up that extra GB of ram is a $439 670 FTW model with 4GB of vram.

passmark scores the 660ti @ 4622 and the 670 @ 5250.

a 680 scores 5565 but costs $529 for a 4gb model

Did he say what resolution he was going to be playing on? Id its only 1920x1080 theres no need for the 4gb.

Id go with a 680 2gb or 7970 3gb over the 660 ti 3gb all day. Its pretty underwhelming for the price

we could shave about $100 off the mobo - but lose the awesome look (sad banana) and improve the vid card.

but we still dont have a SSD in this rig which is a fricking travesty. double - nay - triple sad banana

You always add a SSD. It looked like his first build was pushing $1500 (I liked that one better), so it appears he has plenty of room to spare.

One of my friends may be buying my build saturday, then off to x79
