Someone mentioned this is the Golden Globes thread..

Meaning...what does it say about you when you win Best Screenplay

but NOT best Director..or best picture?

We can go off the Golden Globes right now. He lost both to Affleck.

If he wins Best Screenplay at the Oscars and loses Best Picture (not even nominated for Best Director)

Is this a sign that ultimately....Tarantino should just stick to writing?

Obviously I think no...But even I think he should have won Best Screenplay over The Hurt Locker in 09.....But I didnt think Inglorious Basterds was the "Best Picture"

Its one thing when a guy is just a writer and then a director takes their work and creates their own vision.

But for Tarantino....Its almost like he creates a great script....but doesnt fulfill its potential in some people's eyes when the movie is complete.

Lets look at Tarantino's last two movies. Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. If Tarantino let other great directors...direct those movies instead of him....

Would it have been better? Or much better?

Darren Aronofsky or PTA or Spielberg or even Affleck directing those movies.....Is it better?

Or does a Tarantino movie can only be directed by Tarantino

(Yes I know True Romance was directed by Tony Scott...but some people still feel it would have been better or perhaps worse if Tarantino directed it instead)

I think you're thinking way too deeply right now.

These folks are just voting on these things 1-by-1, individually, not attaching any deeper meaning to what it may mean if someone wins for screenplay and not director or vice versa, etc

Why are you surprised?

There was this little school shooting thingy. Tarantino did not have a chance in hell.

Maybe it means that he had the best screenplay?

that had absolutely nothing to do with it. Django still received 5 Oscar nominations including the most popular category in Best Picture. if the reason for not nominating him for best director was because of a school shooting, then they certainly wouldn't have nominated him for writing the script! lol

I think it just boiled down to the Academy bowing down to Foreign directors as usual by nominating Life of Pi and Amour in best directing when they should have been replaced with Affleck, Tarantino, or Paul Thomas Anderson.

Tarantino's experience with Natural Born Killers pretty much soured him on the idea of giving up control of his work to another director. Robert Rodriguez directed From Dusk Til Dawn but they're friends and I'm guessing Tarantino basically co-directed it.

honestly for American awards the Golden Globes have been getting better over the years (for the most part). they have done a pretty good job of nominating and awarding the most deserving candidates (again in most cases) and definitely more so than the Academy Awards has been.

The Academy has way too many politics and agenda's to push every year.

Which is why he'd probably react to my thread like this

I'm just....

People think a guy like Martin Scorsese or David Lynch WOULDNT have made the movie better?

I'm not saying hand the script to shite directors (then again...Oliver Stone isnt bad..but QT thought he fricked his script up)

As much as I love QT's movies. I do wonder what a different director would do with his work.

More times than not best picture also gets best director. Django was not winning best picture.

Havent seen Django yet.

But I will say, without a doubt, Basterds would not have been nearly as good without Tarantino directing.

I disagree. It was a very original screenplay and deserved the honor of being nominated. There is always an influence of political correctness. Getting nominated is an act of respect. Winning is a public statement. It is the winners that people remember and react to. With the outcry over the effect of violence on TV and film, there's no way Hollywood risks such a backlash by giving such a prestigious honor to such a violent film.

This years Oscar for Best Picture will go to Les Miserables or Argo (which promotes the avoidance of violence). Book it

Tarantino writes his scripts in a way that works for him. his vision on how the movie should be shot, and the little changes that he makes on the fly are things only he can do.

i believe that another director doing a script written by him would not be terrible, but would love the "flavor", if you will, that Tarantino brings to his movies.

Tarantino makes his films because that is what he wants to do. He could give two shits about the awards process. He goes so that he can continue getting funding for his films. That is all. He knows what he needs to do
