Indiana boy abducted in '94 found in Minnesota

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Richard Wayne Landers Jr. was just 5 years old when he and his paternal grandparents, who were upset over custody arrangements, disappeared from a small town in northern Indiana.

Nineteen years later, news that he has been found living under an assumed name in Minnesota left his mother overjoyed and "jumping up and down," her husband said Thursday shortly after police announced the break in the case.

Authorities believe the grandparents took the boy from their home in Wolcottville, about 50 miles southwest of South Bend, and fled. They were charged at the time with misdemeanor interference with custody, which was bumped up to a felony in 1999. But the charge was dismissed in 2008 after the case went cold.

Investigators reopened the case in September when Richard Harter turned over the boy's Social Security card to an Indiana State Police detective.

That turned up a man with the same Social Security number and date of birth living in Long Prairie, about 100 miles northwest of Minneapolis. A driver's license photo for the man appeared to resemble Landers, police said.

Does anyone know if the Walmarks boards of missing children actually do any good?

I'm always heart-broken over these types of stories. I know the parents are super happy to find there lost children, but no matter what, you can't get back those lost 19 years and watching your child grow up.

Fing scumbag grandparents. How can they say they love this kid when they are denying him a relationship with his real family for basically his entire life.

F those people. I can't imagine how damaged this young man must be.

Wish we knew the whole story. The grandparents MIGHT have been doing the boy a favor by rescuing him from his own parents. Could have been major drug heads or gangbangers. Who knows. Odd that grandparents would up and leave with the grandchild without a good reason I'm sure. Still not right though. Should have called social services or something if there were problems.

i need some clarification please

So when his grandparents were arrested in and had all these court hearings in the last twenty years,

Where was the child? or has this not been discovered yet. Youre telling me that they couldnt find this kid if they knew the grandparents where about and had suspicion that they knew his whereabouts.

perplexed.

This times 100. The whole situation makes no sense at all. And my first thought is that if the grandparents took the child, they did it for his own good. Second thought is the mom must have been pretty fricked up the last 20 years to not be able to find her child or push the issue enough for authorities to find him when he was with her parents which just reaffirms my first thought that if grandparents took him, they did it for his own good.

Sounds like shitty detective work by the kid's hometown police. Also, there really is no such thing as 'grandparents rights'.He was kidnapped plain and simple.

A simple warrant could have tracked the grandparents banking transactions. There had to be a paper trail.

It says they were charged with, not arrested or that they were even around. And paternal grandparents would be the fathers parents, not her parents.

When the case reopened, the reason was the father (step) gave Indiana authorities the "boy's" SS #, they ran it and found the same # being used in MN, by a dude with the same birthdate.

It seems to me that the parent(s) and/or authorities did not really look that hard into the matter past a certain point.

I'm not sure how the system works, but if a kid goes missing, you'd think there'd by a red flag going up if that same SS number is used in order to gain employment or enrollment in school...
