Those of you who know former players, what is their attitude toward LSU?

I know a few, and they seem, I guess I would say, less passionate about it than a lot of average fans. They go to the game, they tailgate, but they don't spend hours on message boards and they don't dissect everything that happens with the program. In a way, you could say they have a healthier attitude about it than most of us

They are a lot less passionate that 99.9% of people on here, even after a loss.

ETA: I misread your title. I thought it meant current players. One of them is my roommate.

That doesn't surprise me, either. It's a job, and after they've put in their hours, they want to think about something else. To us, it's a hobby or a pastime we used to get our minds off our jobs

Lol, I roomed with one years ago. He walked on and backed up Kelvin Shephard. Never really played, and hated CLM.

Were those two facts tied together? I can't imagine any walk-on would expect to play for LSU except for the occasional special teams play against a small school.

Yeaaa... that would be why I included the "never really played" phrase.

My girlfriends neighbor is a former O-Lineman from back in the gap, and he loves LSU... Miles, not so much...

Players hate to lose. But they don't sit there and dwell on the loss and analyze the season like people on here do.

First of all, they are busy getting ready for the next game.

Secondly, playing football is what they do, and they like doing it. They aren't rooting for the team to succeed like fans are... they ARE the team. The players view losses as personal lack of execution problems. They are not happy that they didn't play well, that the team didn't play well. They are not happy that they might not get to play for a NC.

But fans are upset with losses because it means the team they root for might not get another NC, or they might not have bragging rights with their friends.

Players aren't even thinking about what that means in the context of the football program, or the school.

Fans want LSU to win because they are fans of LSU. Players want to win because they want their team to win. They want to win personally.

So when LSU plays Clemson, they aren't thinking about "Clemson" vs. "LSU". They are thinking about "our team" vs. "their team".

My point is, they take losses differently than fans do. Fans take losses hard because they are fans of the "brand". They feel the brand represents them, and so they are unhappy if they live vicariously through that brand and it doesn't succeed.

But players aren't "fans" of LSU. Players don't want to lose because they are the competitors. They are competitive and want to beat all other teams. They don't care about the "brand" of LSU during the season and don't look at it the same way fans do.

I don't comment very often. But the question you asked is very interesting because I have been wondering what former players really think. It's hard to get them to say anything or at least the ones I know real well and I bet I know a couple of dozen of them. I know Tolliver was blasting Miles on social media. I saw that on Fox Sports on MSN or somewhere. But the ones I personally know don't have a lot to say about it. They don't get as mad as the normal fan does. Herb Tyler posted on Facebook that he thought we needed a QB that could run and pass and that he felt like our offense lacked any form of identity. Herb was not mad or disrespectful. He just pointed out a few obvious things which is very unusual for him because he does not talk about much except for his kids. He never really talks much about LSU football except Geaux Tigers lets win today. But all in all the former players I know were coached under Dinardo or Saban and don't seem to get all worked up about anything like we do. Markeith Spears is vocal about it more than any of them I know and even then he is careful with his words. Johnny Mitchell does not say much except he hopes we win the game. Mainly Spears thinks we need to obviously make changes with the offense but I never have heard them saying this coach or that coach needs to be fired. Maybe they are burned out on football and don't get worked up about it as much as the rest of us. Maybe it's just my friends but I would assume there would be some Tigers with strong opinions out there.

I knew a former LSU Baseball Player that played way back when I think Jim Smith was the coach. They only had about 500 people at each game and everyone did not have the same uniform he told me. He was a Pitcher. Anyway when Skip came in he was like a kid on Christmas Morning. He got really involved and took me to some games and he knew a lot of people and called his name when we walked in. He was really a big fan of the Baseball Program and really got excited when they won the College World Series.

Anyone who dwells on a game, win or lose, more than a couple days, has an emotional vacuum of some kind in their life that they try to fill with LSU sports. imo
