Led Zeppelin: The Most Influential Band In History

I've been saying this for years. People respond that the Beatles are the most influential, but that's just because they heard somebody else make this claim and they haven't bothered to think about it themselves.
Led Zeppelin created a genre. A tiny little genre called Rock.
The Winner's History Part 1: Led Zeppelin

The Winner's History Part 1: Led Zeppelin
quote:
My decision to begin the Winners' History of Rock and Roll with Led Zeppelin is bound to be at least a little bit controversial. The Beatles have sold more albums, as has Elton John. It could be argued — wrongly, but not outrageously so — that the Stones or even the Grateful Dead have left larger footprints on culture, if those footprints are measured in cubic inches per Rolling Stone cover and/or blacklight poster. But Zeppelin truly is the right choice because it is the band that set the terms by which every other band afterward would come to classify victory in rock music.
It's a critical clich´ to say that punk broke rock history into two halves — but Zeppelin arguably already did this in the late '60s. Never again would the world's top rock bands attempt to emulate Elvis and Chuck Berry like they did B.L.Z. (Before Led Zeppelin); A.L.Z., rock would look and sound indelibly Zep-like. Every band I'm writing about in this series in some way aspired to be like Led Zeppelin; some came closer than others, but nobody has surpassed them. Financial reward, artistic freedom, business intelligence, chemical enrichment, sexual misadventure, posthumous mystique — no matter the conversation, Led Zeppelin is the gold standard.

led zeppelin stole a lot of their songs from various other bands
they've admitted it throughout the years
I love LZ, but I'd have to disagree that they are the most influential band in history, that would be the beatles.

It has to be the Beatles. "Mainstream" music before them was simply awful compared to what it became in the mid to late 60s.

I think LZ was just as diverse as the Beatles. Maybe its just a personal preference thing but I think LZ was def the most influential band of all time.

Personal preference. If that's what it is, that's favorite band.
Influence? Gotta be The Beatles.
LZ influence really went to hard rock and heavy metal.
Mainstream music in the late 70s went to shite. Disco was on the airwaves.
Beatles were critically AND commercially acclaimed. Dominated the top ten. Countless bands formed out of Beatle-mania.

Beatles made it cool to be in a band. LZ made it cool to rock and roll.

That sounded completely different from when LZ played them.

I have always regarded LZ as a sloppy band. I have never really liked them. Most influential band IMHO is The Ramones

Led Zeppelin literally created the prototype for Rock music.
What bands came after the Beatles that copied the Beatles' sound? What genre did the Beatles create?

I don't think the extent of a band's influence is an "opinion" question. There is a right and wrong answer, and you answered the question correctly.

Did anyone actually read the article? The author makes a better case than just, 'Gotta get the Led out'.
