Hopedale trip 1/7/12

Weathermen SUCK.
But anyway, my brother just purchased a nice little flats boat, and we christened her today in Hopedale. Didn't get to fly fish with the wind, and the sun disappeared shortly after we got on the water. But we had a good time breaking in the new boat (and learning how to fish out of something half as wide and several feet shorter than the old bay boat).
Boat is IPB (InshorePowerBoats) flats skiff, 16' long, 50 Yamaha. Nice little rig for sight fishing reds in the marsh.
Fish were off the bank 20', and sluggish to start. Finally found some in a couple ponds we haven't fished before, and put several in the boat. Most were 26"-28", but we did find an eater finally at 23". The fish were exceptionally fat. The 28" fish shown below weighed over 9.5 lbs. We'll hit those ponds again at tourney time later this year.

We're going again Friday. Hope the wind lays down and we can fly fish as well.

Did you launch out of Breton Sound Marina?

I want a flats boat bad, they are so awesome. What tournaments are you fishing in?

Haven't fished any since '08, but may get back into it if time permits. I took a job in '08 that has had me out of town LITERALLY 300+ days/year. Money's great, but I expected 6 months/year tops. Part of that is my fault...as it's pretty much up to me if I wanna except the deployments, but it's hard to say no.
We fished the IFA regularly, and then some club tournies.

Gotcha, I'm hopefully fishing saltwater series with a friend this year. Fished few last year and the IFA. Fun times

Sloopy, that's an IPB 16'...technically a microskiff, but not like a Gheenoe or anything. Has a 50 HP motor on it. Does 35 mph GPS with both of us and a full load (12 gallons) of fuel. It was easy to fish out of, and floats in 6" or less of water. We got in some places we were a little nervous about going in with the bay boat, and it's SO easy to pushpole. Thing weighs less than 500 lbs (hull).
My brother picked it up from a guy on LASM on NYE. Paid less than $10K. Came with pushpole, platforms, POS GPS that is getting replaced today, fuel tanks, everything. One problem, doesn't have a live well system. We're gonna install one though.

Good looking rig. It is almost impossible to get stuck in those boats, they run through some skinny skinny water. If you do get stuck, just shut the motor down and push pole out.

Ive got a gheenoe with a SD on it. Its like driving a go cart on water. Only time I got in a bind was 2 inch water over sand bottom.
Never come close to stuck in the marsh.

JJ&J, I was looking at Gheenoes for a while. Where do you fish?
It's funny coming out of our bayboat into this thing, I described it as a 50HP canoe, but a Gheenoe is REALLY small in comparison.

The furst words out of my mouth after first riding in a flats boat.
"This thing is like a damn go cart on water"

I actually got it to mostly hunt out of. I had a gun box glassed in it rather than the center bench area with livewell.
I fish in dularge mostly. Run the small ponds and sight fish reds. My friend guides down there so I usually only go certain times of year when I know its on. Fun as hell pulling in those reds in that thing.
Hunt all over though. Ive put that boat through some pretty good hell.
Was in PAC in less than inch of water and got up on plane with 3 people.
By myself I can run 26-27 mph.
2 men gear etc stays around 21 mph.

I have fished every LASS event since 2010, (really 2009 when it was GCAA) you'll love it. Less stress than IFA, great group that runs it. The Championship in Venice is a awesome event.

I'm gonna buy a flats boat when I start makin a little bit of money. Would love to have one at the camp for a little 2 man trip without the hassle of the 24'.

I think I spent 2700 for my gheenoe with trailer new. I got the classic.
Its not a huge boat but its plenty for flats fishing pond reds. Ive run it in 2-3 footers also.
Customgheenoe.net has a forum with tons of awesome mods people have done to their boats. Its worth checking out.
You can find them used for reasonable price as well.
And FWIW, I get over 10 miles per gallon in my boat with 2 people.

What motor do you have on that Gheenoe? I have a 25 I'm looking to put on something else...
