At what point did our offensive philosophy change?

We weren't always this pedestrian and unimaginative. I recall we used to throw early and often when JR and Flynn were around. It was normal for our WRs to have 100 yard games and the QBs would put up decent if not huge numbers.

I think the philosophy changed in 2008 when we tried the same will Lee and JJ. We've been gunshy ever since and it won't change unless Mett progresses. And it isn't like we haven't tried recruiting big name QBs in this time.

Reflecting on this, I'd say our poor luck with QB recruiting is as much a reason as sitting on a lead an playing not to lose. Miles is responsible but some of this is just incidental and out of his control. A new OC will help but Mett needs to deliver for us for the philosophy to change.

It changed when Jarrett Lee went down against Ole Miss in 2008, and that's the obvious truth.

It's the chicken and the egg now. The guy has no clue what he wants to do.

Ran it 60% of the time this year and in our bowl, chucked it 60% of the time while shredding their run defense.

We are suffering from a lack of identity. We think we have one and then we mystifyingly walk away from it in crucial situations. We look confused on the field because we are confused on the sidelines.

No shite doc!! Less used to be a ballsy unpredictable coach. Now it's just boring because he's become vanilla. When did Les lose his balls? Remember the term "Lesticles"?

I agree Mett needs to step up. But if he doesn't, bench him. Don't stick with him like he did JJ.

I remember going for and getting 4 fourth downs against UF. And fake FG's and shite. My, how things have changed.

FWIW we threw on 1st down a lot against Clemson.

He can't progress by handing off.

It went from conservative to super conservative after Lee threw four INTs against Bama in '08.

I don't see it changing whatsoever with Miles as HC. Why would he wake up tomorrow and think he has to do something different? In his mind, 10 wins are considered a successful season.

If he didn't have an epiphany about the offense after his drumming on 1-9-12, there is no chance anything changes.

The rest of college football has caught up with his scheme.

I think Les is still ballsy and a gambler.

Unfortunately, when you gamble, you sometimes lose and that's what is currently happening more often.

This is also the source of much of his criticism.

JR and Flynn
fisher developed both of them. when he left miles couldn't find anybody or himself to develope lee, jefferson, shepard, or mett.

how is this out of miles' control? he recruits dual threat qb's like shep & jefferson, then pocket passers like lee & mett. i don't think miles knows what offense he wants to run

While I agree that it is not all on the coaches, this doesn't account for the repetitive and simplistic formations we run which make it easier for the defenses to scheme against a given play. It also doesn't explain why a back like Hill was given limited carries when he was absolutely gashing the defense. The talent is there. The scheming is what appears to be weak.

I don't think this is necessarily the case.

Les is going to recruit the best available talent regardless of style. Once he has the roster complete, then he decides what kind of offense he wants to run based on the skill sets of the players available.

This is much better than forcing players into a specific system that may or may not cater to their strengths.

it's not forcing if you have a system in place & recruit to that system. you think switzer & osborne recruited pocket passers or a somebody that could run their system?

that's the problem. miles needs to have a system & recruit for that specific system. this can only help the offense imo.

My initial thought was we simplified and dumbed down the offense so much because neither JL or JJ were particularly adept at reading defenses and our defense was so good...a combination of the two.

I thought it was better to tell them where they had to go and limit their options than to let them improvise and compromise our chances.

I was hoping with Mett we could at least see more sophisticated passing game.

Maybe when you win despite limitations you begin to think maybe simplification is the best way?

Han, that virtually disappeared before the 2010 season. Things changed after 2009 and slowly has regressed as far as a legitimate offense..
