With Memphis saying they want to part ways with Rudy Gay. Should the Hornets trade their first round pick, and another player or 2 for him?

I think the only way you do that, and take on his contract, is if you think he's the missing piece of a championship team.

He's not having that great of a year and we'd have to give up a big piece to get him (EG or Ryno + others) just to make the salaries work. If he doesn't improve, he's the kind of guy that we could get next offseason (when we have a bunch of cap space available) for a future pick and someone like Jason Smith. I'd much rather just be patient and let the young guys develop this year, then next offseason go after a Gay/Granger type trade or sign someone like Iggy.

This is the reason a Gay trade is a non starter. Acquiring him becomes a lateral move at best. You'd need a 3rd team really over valuing Lopez/Vasquez and our pick to make it a viable trade.

Please!! I would give first round pick this year, Lopez, Aminu, and Rivers, plus a little cash.
Whoever says I'm an idiot for not waiting on rivers, look in the mirror...Guys terrible

That only makes sense if one of the posters here is Austin Rivers and he happens to be playing shitty basketball at that moment.

Memphis fans would riot

An average center, two shitty players, and a first round pick in a garbage draft year for a borderline all-star. Not happening.

Somebody like Gordon or Anderson would have to be involved for the trade to even be considered.

Not even halfway through his rookie year and you're giving up

Well Memphis might just want to trade Gay because of his contract cause I'm pretty sure they are close to the tax line

No, he's worse than terrible. But yeah he's only 20.

I doubt they settle for peanuts for him though

Lots of teams would love to have Gay and willing to take his contract and would have plenty more to offer in a trade than the Hornets

It's going to have to be a decent amount in terms of expirings, though, as they're $4m over the tax currently and $2m over for next season. Lopez is on a very good contract (can be treated as an expiring if they want) and they would love the cheap labor of the draft pick. Again, though, that leaves us completely dismantling our team if we want to keep EG/Ryno.

And it takes even more salary than he listed in that hypothetical trade:
Gay

for

Lopez
Aminu
Henry
Rivers
Mason

works and gives them up to $11m in expirings (if they want to let Lopez go). Again, I'd much rather wait until next offseason to make this type of deal since we'll have the cap space to take on a player without sending much of anything back.

And then you have to choose whether you would want
Vasquez/EG/??/Ryno/Davis, Lopez, Smith, Rivers, a few minimum type players, the pick and $16m to spend on FAs

or

Vasquez/EG/Gay/Ryno/Davis, Smith, a few minimum players, no pick and $8m to spend on FAs. That's a very exciting starting 5 but you're in trouble with depth. Giving up Lopez is big. We really just need to be patient this season.

They said that before they had a great year. They aren't trading him when they are one of the top teams in the West unless they get great value.
