| What would be the public reaction to a draft today? (Posted on 1/3/13 at 10:14 am)
Would they rally behind it? Would people even go? I don't think it would fly under any circumstances in today's society

Depends on the reason. I'd probably be visiting Canada.

The only circumstance that I think it would fly is if we were attacked by a foreign country on our own soil or if a foreign country started bombing us via drones.

This. I think we'd get solid participation if a racist foreign power was coming in and raping our wives/daughters and killing and pillaging.

I don't think you have to worry about that with Obama as president. Americans die and he bends over for more.

if a place like China invaded or dropped a bomb on our soil and they decided to institute a draft, you'd have a much different public reaction than if they had started one in 2003 for Iraq

If America was attacked a la Pearl Harbor, I can assure you that my generation (18-35) would be more than capable of producing men to go to war as in WWII. Society really hasn't changed that much since then. There were delinquents then, there are delinquents now. America was a sleeping giant then. There is not a doubt in my mind that younger people today on the whole have just as much resolve as those back in the 40s. People always look at the good ole days and don't see the negatives. Discount us all you want, but its just a myth.

Yeah, it would definitely be a disaster. Most of the educated youth of America would flock to Canada or Sweden. Only the rural reactionaries who wrap themselves in the flag and believe in outdated "patriotism" would rally behind such an atrocity.

And if Canada was attacked and had a draft, where would they go?

I don't think Canada would be drafting foreign nationals

If that were to occur I would follow Mike Gogulski's path and become a stateless person recognized as such in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Oh that guy, the one who ran into the arms of a "state" for its protection and benefits.

Sounds like a brilliant action to take. A true libertarian and anti-censorship activist.

Really? Didn't know that. I wouldn't think they'd want citizens of other countries in their armies. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

What is selfish about not having the state own your body? And why the hell would we need a draft? Are we planning on starting another war?
