I just got the regular 2012 Macbook pro for Chirstmas and was wondering what makes the retina display models better?

Retina display is great - if developers develop for it.
Most websites were created before retina and thus aren't developed for it. Those look like crap on retina.
Without boring you about the details, it's essentially watching old vhs tapes on your new LED screen - looks really bad. BUT the HD stuff looks really good.
So yes, it's worth it, but you won't get full enjoyment for a while. (Most developers develop with methods that work really well for retina, so it won't be long)

In my opinion, no, they aren't worth it, but I don't use mine for gaming, movie watching, etc.

really it's only 'worth it' (in some sense) if you do video and or photo editing. Doing anything else with it is just luxury.

I'm not calling it better, I just added that it was more expensive.
Better is arguable, more expensive is a fact.

you don't want to use the retina laptops for gaming. the video cards on those things would cry.

yeah, it's really going to take a Mac Pro with as big a gpu as you can put into it to really take advantage of a retina display in gaming.

and the 13 inch MBPro doesn't even support discrete graphics
and the best you can get in a 15 inch is a Geforce 650M, but that's going to come on top of a $2200 price tag. Just not worth it.
eta: and the website doesn't even let you configure a 15 inch MBPro to have discrete graphics.. so no idea what the total price would come to.

I know  we talked about it a couple months ago. Sad thing is apple is working to get rid of discrete graphics all together. They want everything on a single chip.

I have an iPad with retina display and I like it on HD videos. Other than that, it's whatever.

eh, it could be really great if they had the hardware to utilize it. Unfortunately it'll have to wait until it spurs other laptop manufacturers to up the resolution on their Windows laptops.

and while they're at it, there need to be higher resolution desktop monitors as well. There's no reason that 15 inch 1080p monitors don't exist, when you can get a 15 inch 1080p laptop.
What I really want is a 21-23 inch 2560x1440 or 3840x2160 screen.
