I really loved Gangs of New York. But I thought Leo's acting was a bit "meh"

He was completely blown away in comparison to Daniel Day Lewis.

It wasnt until The Departed that I started becoming a fan of Leo "grown up acting"

And then he's gotten better and better as the years have gone on.

Its a shame because if you take Leo "Django Unchained/Shutter Island" version and put it Gangs of New York 10 years ago....

It improves the movie dramatically. Would Leo have been as DDL? No. But he would have been much better and the movie would have been.

Leo is one of the best actors on the planet. DDL was just insane good though. I agree that Leo is only getting better. He already has an amazing resume.

I thought he was fine, DDL was just amazing in it so it makes everyone else look average.

He started to come into his own that year. Between Gangs of New York and Catch Me If You Can, 2002 was a very good year for DiCaprio.

Good catch there. He was much more impressive in Catch Me If You Can IMO.

I'm looking over all his roles.

It's astonishing that he hasn't won an Oscar.

It's hard to argue against the guys who did win but Leo has had amazing staying power.

He should have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Instead it went to Jamie Foxx for his impersonation of Ray Charles.

I happen to think Leo was very good in Edgar.

That was when I started liking him as an actor. I had realized that the last three movies I bought were all Leo (GoNY, Aviator, and CMIYC). Those were three very good movies, and I've liked him ever since.

I don't think he has had many roles that he didn't blow out of the water. Even GoNY. Acting alongside DDL can be tough no matter how good you may be. DDL is on a higher level than anyone else on the planet.

I have been a fan of Leo since What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries.

The only role of his that I thought was below his standard was Romeo and Juliet but that's also because it's just a horrible movie all around.

Leo is definitely one of my favorite actors right now. No one has mentioned it, but I really enjoyed Blood Diamond. I think the main reason was because he was in the movie (along with Djimon Hounsou, who I also like).

For me it was after I saw Blood Diamond on cable. Not a fan of Gangs. Didn't see Catch Me..., The Aviator & The Departed until viewing them after Blood Diamond. I agree he got better in Catch Me...

Wish I'd seen it and the others sooner. Don't miss his movies anymore.
