| recycling for money (Posted on 12/26/12 at 8:13 am)
Turned in a bunch of junk the other day. Cables, batteries, etc. Stuff that I kept in a storage bin instead of throwing away this past year. 130 bucks worth. Taking the cash and will add a few silver ounce coins to my stash. Easy $$ Took my youngest to the recycle yard and she was amazed how you can get paid for junk.

Scrap metal is good. I used to haul any scrap metal we piled up for my dad's business and you could always make an easy buck.

I save computer parts. A good bit of gold in them, if you know what you're doing.

Can you expand on what you do with yours? I have three desktops stashed in my room and it looks likes I am hoarding. There is a place that will recycle the computer parts nearby at no charge, although any monitors/tvs require a fee. I've ripped out the hard drives and stowed them away, but the rest is useless considering some of the technology dates back to 1998. I was able to install puppy linux on the machines with the limited hardware resources.

I pull pins out of the old cables and chips that are attached to the boards, sell whatever working parts I can if they're somewhat modern... Eventually, I take it in to a recycling center as a bag of pins. They're only plated with gold but pulling all of the shite will save you room as you can just trash the rest. It's not a huge amount of money, but what the hell else are you going to do with all of those old computers?

Your work sounds fairly comprehensive. How do you come across these old computers? Do you advertise on sites such as craigslist for old components?

I never pay for them. I usually just ask around family and friends/coworkers for old crappy electronics that people having laying around. One man's trash.... Advertising on craiglist wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Awesome thanks. I try to do my best to scan through things before I get rid of it. As far as old computers go, I always strip the hard drives out just for personal security. I definitely haven't put any more effort towards stripping other components for compensation.
