Beer suggestions...

I've been looking to try other kinds of beer than the usual stuff. I've noticed that IPA's are popular here but the only one I've tried is from Abita and while I found it drinkable I didn't so much care for it in the sense that I wouldn't go out and try to find it again. Just looking for different suggestions to the beginners market, not trolling.
This is the stuff I usually buy (easiest):
Miller Lite (easiest and quantity, not quality)
Amstel Light
Kroenenburg (sp?) 1664
Brooklyn Lager
Dixie (it was bought as a gift, not altogether tragic except for the headache it caused)
Appeciate any suggestions!

I kind of figured it wasn't the best example. The color should've been a clue, some sort of cloudy dark brown that you just feel like can't be right.

First off, stay away from Abita. I know it's local and ingrained into the area but there are other, better local choices.
Easy transition from those you listed (in order):
Start with:
-NOLA Blonde (light and refreshing)
-Parish Canebrake (light and refreshing)
-Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (step towards IPAs)
-Fullers London Porter (nice smooth darker beer, still light though)
-NOLA Hopitoulas (full step into IPAs)
-Sierra Nevada Celebration (solid seasonal IPA which is in stores right now!)
-(Racer 5 maybe should be in this group BC of its greatness)
Step it up (inpo):
-Racer 5 (many say its te best IPA we get in town, only on tap or in bombers)
-Stone Ruination (another great IPA)
-Stone Sublimely Self Riteous (great black IPA, also called an Escodian ale [sp?])
-Sierra Nevada Stout (good stout to try)
-NOLA Irish Channel Stout (great stout, only on tap and seasonal. Available in late winter)
-Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout (solid)
-Hop Rod Rye (rye IPA, bombers only)
Step it up more:
These styles can turn heads for te young beer connoisseur (stone SSR may belong in this list)
-Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine (One of the best examples of a barleywine, big bodied with Malts and lots of hops, available seasonally in late winter)
-North Coast Old Rasputin (One of the best exames of this style, Russian Imperial Stout, very dark and hoppy)
There's much more out there. These are good brews that are easily findable.
You could go through Sierra Nevadas lineup and take it from there. That's what I did with my dad.

Abita Jockamo is one of the worst examples of an IPA you can find.
tetu's advice is good.

I haven't seen any Mikkelers or Lagunitas brands that I've seen as far as I know... Anything specific I should look for? I've seen Stone but haven't gone for it yet. Thinking that since I'm off for until the new year this is the time to experiment.

So many good beers out there. Join us in the daily FBD threads. Lots of good beer info exchanged.

very nice list tetu, but if this cat is in north Louisiana he's going to have a hard time procuring a lot of those.

Agree with tetu's suggestions.
I'll also add to the "step in up" category:
-Green Flash West Coast IPA (one of the best IPAs available locally, just make sure it is fairly fresh)
-Stone Russian Imperial Stout (the best Russian Imperial Stout we get IMO)

Great list!!! Thank you!
And it was Jockamo that is my only previous IPA experience. Tasted like shite.
I like Abita light, golden, strawberry and satsuma but that's all I can get on board with and strawberry and satsuma lose their novelty pretty quickly. I've Nola blonde once and haven't been able to find it here since. Oddly, the only store where I can find most of this stuff is in the middle of nowhere (Delta).

Close to what is referred to as the Mecca and in the home of the greatest Sonic on Earth. I lurked a bit before I started posting lol.

You'll prob have some luck finding more stuff in Vicksburg since their laws changed. (Yahoo brewing makes some fine stuff from what I understand)
We have a hunting camp in newllton
I'm assuming you're speaking of delta, la near tallulah?

It probably says something that from here in Atlanta, this is the first time I've heard of Abita's IPA.
Likely not their specialty.
ETA: Forgot that's what Jockamo is. Coolest part is the name and label.

Yep, that is the place. Weirdest location ever for a liquor store but they have a hell of a selection.

I've read them before but I kind off figured by usual stuff wouldn't be appreciated on the FBD board. Very convience store types of beer on my end here on a day to day basis.
