I'm not from Louisiana, so I've never seen Smith play except for a couple of game tapes but if we were able to get McNeil, could Smith be split out as a WR more often than on the line as a TE? Or is he not fast enough to play wide out? I know we need TEs but if we fail to get a tall rangy WR I'm wondering if we could have smith take that role, thoughts?

This

Hes a tight end, thats his position. Doesnt mean hes not gonna be split out wide sometimes and take advantage of his pass catching ability and mismatches

From what I've heard the coaches don't think he can get much bigger for his frame so they may let TM work to lean him up and improve his speed and play him more at WR. I think this is why we are going after more TE's. I am real excited to see Smith play and where he ends up. I think he may play some of both TE and WR depending on the package.

Reminds me a lot of LaDarius Green, that played at UL-L. Really athletic, can split him out wide to use his size or keep him tight to get a mismatch.

There are a lot of things you can do with a guy like this.

Smith is a beast. In going to watch his career closely. He gives LSU a matchup nightmare to opponents.

Where he's special is he's multiple. He can line up at TE and block or catch or lineup in slot. This allows LSU to line up in multiple formations without changing personnel. This the D can't change personnel so you have a competitive advantage.

Saban HATES this

And Smith is from a good family. His dad is a state trooper in Lake Charles.

I hope they split him out wide in the red zone.

We need to use him like Stanford and ND use their TE's

I've seen many times this year. He can play TE or split out. Has good speed and great hands. I've seen him block , act as a decoy helping Quinn and he plays hurt. Great kid from nice family. A D coordinators nightmare.

I've seen him the last 3 years vs WM. He reminds me of Shannon Sharpe. Not comparing him to a HOFer. Just saying his body and play reminds me of him.

This. Also he is very similar to an Antonio gates big and strong but can go up and get the ball

Whats good about him is that you can change formations using him as a WR/Slot, like the pats do, without changing the offensive package. This keeps the D from subbing in the right guys for match ups.

In 2013, Mettenberger's completion percentage might rise dramatically as Landry calms down plays in games like he does in practice -- catching everything within reach. John Diarse, like Landry, will be a physical set of sticky fingers. Smith, too, has good hands.

Beckham and Boone might remain the longball threats, but I think the short and medium throws should have a lot of reliable targets next season. Wright played well in 2012 -- not the speediest or shiftiest after catching the ball, but he fights for extra yards. Stokes might play similarly.

Not sure how Dural and Avery Johnson will fit into the passing game.

Brazil in the slot...could certainly get a lot of yardage after the catch due to his speed.

LSU in 2013, with Mettenberger at QB and a solid OL, could have a 70% completion rate and 2800 (or more) yards.

you are forgetting Leslie...who will most likely challenge immediately for playing time.

After this recent delay for Leslie, I hope there is not a pattern...like with Gardner. Hopefully Leslie, Gardner, and McNeil will be LSU Tigers.
