I look for the internet connectivity and make sure you look at the number of inputs.

3D!!!!!
I kid I kid. Yeah budget is a big factor. Smart TVs are the way to go now as far as up to date stuf goes. They make some now that you can change channels and select thinks XBOX connect(sp?) style now. They're really expensive but the latest thing out. If you just want a big 1080p, which is good color, Walmart has 50inchers under $1000. Crazy good prices compared to 5 years ago.
Edit: Under $600 budget, disregard everything I said.

budget? probably less than 600 - it will not be main viewing tv...

i look for HDMI inputs, 1080 unless the tv is smaller than 42", then 720 is ok. Deep blacks and accurate color. Refresh rate 120 or above.

for under $600 you generally wont get all the latest bells and whistles.... ie 3d, wifi and a full suite of apps.
as previously stated, the tv you buy should be determined first by what you want to do with it, and secondly on how you are setting it up(amount of light in the room, hang on wall, number of inputs, etc)

Get a plasma. Cheaper and still puts out the best picture. The burn in problem no longer exists either.
