Sulphur High hires Jeff Wainright

The head coach from Kinder High School.

For you Lake area fans and/or anyone with ties to Sulphur, what do you think?

At least it's not another Asst. Coach retread that applied. I'm surprised Sulphur went outside the good ole boy system and hired someone outside of the school lineage.

I believe he was the only one who applied that did not have Sulphur ties. He is a young, hungry proven head coach. His teams the last couple of years had a chance to really do damage in the playoffs, except they always went up against curtis or evangel early every year.

I'm sure he will run Sulphur similiar to what he did in Kinder. Strong defense, ball control offense. He ran the double slot I believe, similiar to what Parkview Baptist runs.

I believe he can do a great job if he can keep kids in Sulphur and not move away to other schools like to St. Louis. From what I hear he is highly respected among all coaches around this area, even college coaches.

Absolutely agree with this. I actually mentioned to someone is that the biggest issue Sulphur has is getting kids to come out to play. Viator and Bourgois did that and both had pretty successful runs ('cept Bourgois single handedly lost the state championship game in '06, but he got there nonetheless).

From what I understand, numbers dropped tremendously when Fuselier was hired and you could see the backlash of kids not wanting to play. Fuselier was a retread coach and I have no idea why they ever hired him in the first place. Now, all Wainwright needs to do is get rid of a couple coaches that have been on that good ole boy staff that has been there for over 10 years and I think Sulphur has the capability of getting back to being in the top 3-5 ij the state.

Just a matter of not letting the terrible politics in this city override coaching decisions.

agree. This does seem like nice hire and you are right about getting kids out to play. there are so many atheletes in mossville and other places that do poorly in school, have no parents adn never make it to the field. he needs to work wihthe JR High coaches and families there and he can have success.

Great coach and even better person. Wish my son would have had the chance to play for him. I can't speak for the problems in Sulphur, but I can speak for Jeff. Grew up with him, and coached with him for 5 yrs. He's gonna do a great job, and he will get the kids out if any are walking the halls. Congrats Sulphur! You got a keeper!

Sounds like Sulphur had recently fallen back to where it was when I was in school with Chaumont. We had a ton of athletes who played basketball, baseball, wrestled, but didn't play football. Viator seemed to change that, but it looks like it fell back to where it was. Hopefully this guy can turn it around.

wainright seemed one of the least attractive candidates of the ones mentioned in the paper. Dont know much about him as a coach but thats a jump to murderers row and inheriting a staff could be a problem, Trying to bring in his system to the "good ole boys" who may not be receptive. Sulphur always reminded me of Denham springs, lots of kids with community support (may be good or bad) but not alot of athletes, but maybe running a wing / option offense can offset that.

Wait, you serious?

Who was a better candidate? The candidates that were listed in the paper were:

John Paul Duhon - He's been an assistant for 15 years @ Sulphur. You think there's a reason he's been just an assistant for 15 years and never got the opportunity or ever been hired as a head coach? He's also the wrestling coach....or was. Add that to the fact that from what I gathered from people, he would have about the same amount of kids come out as Fuselier because kids don't like him. He's been on with Viator, Hebert, Bourgious, and Fuselier. Never changed positions or got a promotion. I wouldn't have gone to any more Sulphur games if that guy would have been hired.

David Trahan - I've known David for a long time. He's actually a little younger than I am, but I wouldn't have minded seeing him get a shot. He's an asst. coach at McNeese under Viator but I guess age and experience cost him Sulphur. I would guess he would be starting at a smaller school and then move up.

Reynolds - He hasn't been coaching. Last success he's had was in Vinton. In 1999.

The out of state guys, I tried looking them up and come up with nothing. If they were that good, you would find at least something online somewhere.

Now, talking to people that has watched his teams play and played against him, Wainwright was the perfect hire for that spot.

I've known Jeff since I was a kid. He's about 7 years older than me or so. Great guy and fantastic coach.

My uncle used to be a coach and then the principal at Sulphur. I know he always thought highly of Jeff.

I don't think wainwright is a bad hire. In my opinion a few guys had better resumes. Trahan had college experience and coached in 5A and on both sides of the ball. Duhon I'm not sure about but had a solid win-loss record at vinton. The Adams guy from Alabama won a state title and played for another. The guy from Texas also had some college experience. 2A in southwest louisiana isn't that strong and the district sulphur plays in is probably the toughest. Plus having to teach his system to a staff he inherits is tough. Don't think it's a bad hire, you can go 6-4 or 7-3 in that district and have a great year.

Yep. I remember Fuselier being a vocational teacher and an assistant under Chaumont back in the 90s. Those Sulphur teams were just awful. Hence my aggravation with Duhon being a candidate. He is in the same mold.

It wouldnt have surprised me at all if Duhon were hire because of that good ole boy system at Sulphur.

Chaumont - should have given the ball more to Chris "soul train" Ryan.

By the way, what was Bourgeois thinking on 3rd and an inch versus Acadiana in the Dome? Still shaking my head at that cluster****.

Any coach at Sulphur has to have turnout to be successful. Not a lot of college level potential athletes in the pool but there is the capability of building a consistent program there with the right fit at Head Coach. Large public school with a lack of private schools in the area.

Try playing backyard ball with that dude. Wasn't flag football either. Took 4 of us to get him down most of the time.

3rd and 4th down! Both plays he called were terrible. He single handedly lost that game. Bourgeois should have never been at QB. He hadn't played QB since the beginning of the year and then all of the sudden in the championship game, he takes out his QB that got him there and puts in his son/nephew whatever he is. Just terrible.

Yep. You can tell the difference when kids don't want to play for the coach. Kids didn't want to play for Chaumont and Fuselier and they wanted to play for Viator and Bourgeious. Big difference.

Chris Ryan used to ride his bike through the courtyard before school singing the national anthem. No one told him to stop.

I saw a freshman drop his change under a coke machine once. Chris lifted it off the ground so the kid could get his quarter. Dude was a beast. Too bad he couldn't play bigtime college ball due to grades.

I graduated with chris ryan. I have never seen a bigger beast dominate a game like that. I believe it was against ruston who was ranked like number 1 in state at the time circa 1991 or so.. Ryan played every snap aside from extra points and punts. He had 4 long tds including a kick return...plus had 5 or six sacks playing DE. He was unblockable on that side as well...if he had been able to get into a big time program with their weight program and coaching he would have been a legend...he is also a super nice guy
