| Pelosi Backed Boehner's Tax Cut Proposal (Posted on 12/18/12 at 11:41 am)
quote:
WASHINGTON — Speaker of the House John Boehner's "Plan B" to avert the fiscal cliff would cut taxes for incomes under $1 million — a higher threshold than the White House demands, but one that had a powerful backer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. In May, Pelosi sent Boehner a letter calling for the immediate passage of a middle class tax cuts up to that level, while President Barack Obama was on the campaign trail calling for taxes to rise on incomes over $250,000. The White House has since revised that target at $400,000 in ongoing negotiations with Boehner, but has shown few signs it would accept the $1 million level.
Both Reid, Pelosi and the White House are now on record as opposing this. Reid says it will not pass the Senate and Hoyer has said he will get all House dems to vote against. My only question is why? Pelosi Backed Boehners Tax Cut Proposal Pelosi letter to Boehner

Pelosi is nothing but a partisan hack. In the end they will back it but they will make it look like they fought like hell to try to continue their destruction of this country. Remember Obama leaves for Hawaii on 17 Dec. so they will back something soon. How sad that many are just barely getting by and can't celebrate or spend money for Christmas and Obama goes to a beach mansion. I wonder if Obama will go in an underground shelter on the 21st?

Because it allows them to keep demogoging Republicans as the party of no. That said, i'm glad they are opposing it. Let it burn.

Actually, Mrs. Pelosi can. Now that Mr. Boehner, Ohio Republican, has embraced the proposal in the "fiscal cliff" negotiations with President Obama, Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, and her team are urging their party's lawmakers to vote against it. Mrs. Pelosi's second-in-command, House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, said Tuesday that Mr. Boehner's proposal to raise taxes on income of more than $1 million is a "political ploy." Mr. Hoyer said the Republicans' proposal isn't a serious effort to cut the deficit. "The math doesn't work," Mr. Hoyer told reporters. "I think it's a political ploy to give his members some opportunity to respond to the public that thinks all the Republicans are doing is protecting the wealthy. We're going to urge our members to vote 'no.' The leader [Mrs. Pelosi] and I both agree, we're not for this." Mr. Hoyer said it was a political ploy when Democrats proposed the same idea seven months ago. Stupid bastards.

It makes sense that Pelosi would back this in the first place given that she represents San Francisco. Making over $250k in the area she represents means you are poor. But she now must have gotten in trouble for it. That's sad.

People on both parties should be on board with this plan. Remember the "rich" voted for Obama so Boehner is only going by what Shummer and Pelosi described as rich---$1,000,000? I agree if we are going to raise taxes who better than these people. It's just complete BS that now they are against it.

None of this math works. $120B/yr in estimated tax increases may result in $80B in revenue. $120B/yr cuts may result in $80B in actual spending decrease. That is a difference of $160B, or 15% of the deficit. Leaving a $500B difference between Bush's average deficit and the new, "improved" deficit.

Obama has never intended to do anything other than go over the cliff and then offer emergency middle class tax relief when the new congress is constituted. He will then get to claim that he saved the middle class via tax cuts while at the same time blaming republicans for letting us go over the cliff. He will also get his tax increase on "the rich". He will likely also be able to leverage the Rs into voting for more entitlements. If Boehner were smart, he would hold a press conference and announce to the world that they have tried to work with the president, to the point of having Pelosi's backing at one point and they are unwilling to work. He needs to tell the world that since the President is not willing to work, they are withdrawing any tax related concessions and will only discuss spending cuts from this point forward. Call Obama's bluff. If we go over the cliff, it will be on Obama. Obama will then be at the Rs mercy to lower taxes on the middle class at which point they have the leverage. The Rs need to use political judo on his ass. They won't do it though.
