Yea, they are supposed to have a coating to prevent spalling.

Have they started selling them with the coating yet? Or are you talking about DIY or taking them to someone?

Thats a shite ton man. 15 pounds in just two plates, not counting mags, weapons, anything else is a lot.

Yat, I thought those plates I linked said they were coated, thats what I was referring to.

Line-X Protective Base Coat: All AR500 Armor Body Armor now ships with a Line-X Protective Base Coat which provides a level of spall and fragmentation mitigation properties and superior chemical, wear, water, and harsh condition resistance

Thats all I was talking about

Yeah they aren't too clear on it, the picture appears that they have a coating, but there's an option to add a coating for an extra $20. I'm assuming it doesn't come with anything.

And still twice the weight of some of the composite ones on the market that are still more durable than the ceramic ones. Technology has come a long way, and you know military technology lags farrrrrrr behind everyone else.

Oh yeah, just saying for me cutting the weight in half of what I wore is amazing. I would've killed for that 4 years ago.

Did you watch their videos? Didn't appear to have much spalling or anything and they took multiple shots from close range with different calibers.

That's exactly what I was asking...I didn't know they started shipping with the coating.

I have been seriously looking at these...but they are over 20 pounds if you opt for side plates. The price is so good though!

Those look like solid options for AR500. Here are the ones that are rated for pistols that I will be getting.

Are you going to stack them with the kevlar lining as well or just the plate?

Were they really? Hell, they're making stand alone ceramics that weigh half as much...and you don't even want to know how much those ultra-light polyethylene plates weigh.

Like 3 pounds, but $$$$$.

yeah man, the whole rig, which was just the carrier, front and back plates, was about 33-35lb, and adding the side plates which I think are about 5-7lbs your already about 40lbs without other gear like med pouch, ammo, radio, rifle etc. I think the whole rig topped out at about 65-70lbs.

If you're just wanting something for pistols, why not go for the soft option?

I'm not sure...think it's necessary? I was waiting until they resolved spalling issues. Honestly, part of me feels silly wanting to buy rifle plates.

That stuff is cheaper, no blunt trauma, and lighter than most soft options.

I would. From my understanding the soft kevlar lining offers some additional protection as well as force absorption if you are hit. I dont think it would feel too good either way but I'm sure its worse without some level of soft padding.
