| New Best EPL Goalkeeper (Posted on 12/11/12 at 12:40 pm)
Based off statistical analysis is Stoke City's Asmir Begovic Begovic is tied for most minutes played (Every game played) @1440 along with Cech, Hart, Jaaskelainen, Schwarzer, Al Habsi and Howard. Begovic has the most clean sheats out of any keeper in the EPL at 8. Hart and Cech are tied for 2nd with 6. Begovic really impresses in his Shots Faced to Goal Allowed Ratio at a whopping 16.25. He has faced 195 shots this year which is more than Cech, Hart, both of Arsenals keepers combined, both of man utd's keepers combined, Cesar, Krul, Howard, and both of Tottenham's keepers combined amongst others. In fact, only 5 keepers have faced more shots then Begovic. To compliment his high shot faced, he has only allowed 12 goals this year, 2 of them off of PK's. Regardless of the high shot count he's faced, he's allowed less goals then Cech, Hart, or Howard. Pepe Reina at only 1080 minutes played has allowed 16 goals. Stoke City are in 9th place with 5 wins and 8 draws. Without Begovic, they could possibly be facing relegarion. Here's the link to all goalkeeper statistics thus far. Keeper Stats highlight vid

Interesting stuff. They need a goalscorer now that they have the best GK and right back in the league.

Cool. I have been impressed with Ruddy from Norwich as well this year.

Meh, up for debate. Stats don't tell the whole story. I'd venture to say that a large percentage of shots Begovic has faced has come from beyond the 18 due to Stoke's defending style.

Just call it statistics. You need more than a half a year sample size for any real analysis. Not to mention team line-ups vary blah blah blah. Basically what I'm saying is it's really hard to compare athletes with just numbers. I'd say it's foolish to do so.

That's the basis of all sports. In baseball its all about homeruns, era, rbi's. Basketball it's about PPG, rebounds, assist to turnover ratio Football its ypc, td. passing yards per game, qb rating, sacks. Stats may be slightly misleading but they generally paint a good picture. Now of course this topic is up for debate on who thinks who is the best, but the numbers are clear evidence that he is one of the best if not the best. I'm also gonna update the OP with a highlight video if anyone is interested.

Begovic is actually Canadian. He's the Bosnian Owen Hargreaves.

Ever heard him interviewed? He sounds like an American so I'm assuming he's spent a good deal of time in either USA or Canada.

Pretty cool. I would contend that Lloris, Hart, and Cech are the three best keepers, but you cannot argue that Begovic is having a terrific year. Also, do you have any way to measure the difficulty of shots on goal faced? 16.25 is an impressive ratio, but the context also matters. 16.25 lollipop saves per goal is fine and dandy, but I would bet it is partially to attributed to facing relatively easy shots from a vicious Stoke defense and playing on a shite pitch (on a Tuesday night in the rain against Messi of course).

Wasn't born in Canada, but lived there and played on their youth teams. Switched to the Bosnian National team when it was time to move to the senior squad.

No I don't have a way to measure difficulty, but it's not like Hart and Cech have some crap defenses. Also about Lloris, Friedel has played almost twice as many more minutes in goal than Lloris. I haven't watched many Tottenham games, so I don't know if he's injured or what.

I am not discrediting Begovic. You offer nice metrics, but the more precise and greater of a vacuum effect the stats can have, the better. Shot difficultly would be nice, but it would be arbitrary and inexact in nature, much like defensive metrics in baseball. Lloris has not played because I would assume he was not yet up to speed with Tottenham. He seems to be the starter at this point.

You're argument is valid. My mind was stuck on goalkeeping and what Vicks mentions is in line with my though process. Some stats are more concise than others.

After reviewing the statistics of all of the keepers who have played max minutes so far this season, Begovic is towards the bottom of the group statistically speaking. EPLindex (a subscription based statistics site) used to show a breakdown of where all the saves were made, and a percentage breakdown of where the shots came from on the field. I can't find that option now. Begovic's saves/minute is almost the worst of the group which leads me to believe that Stoke's defense forces a lot of poor shots. The shots on target he faces in relation to the total shots he faces must be low.
