Whatever happened with The Event?

I watched the first 8 or however many episodes then they went to a long break. They came back after the extended break but I had lost interest at that point and quit watching.
Did they ever say what "the event" was and what caused it? Or what made all the birds die?

it got cancelled after the first season which sucks because i really liked it

roommate and I used to watch this.
The first part of S1 was really sluggish to me and boring. The second part was actually interesting and added legs to the storyline.

I remember some aliens already being on Earth like the black secret service guy. What was the aliens' intentions? Did they want to just live peacefully as humans or did they have some master plan in mind?

It's been a while, but from what I recall:
Their planet was dying so they were looking for a new place to live. Dont remember how they first got here, but they were waiting for our technology to get advanced enough so they could build this teleport thing and bring their planet and people here. Then they tried to release this new virus/disease that would pretty much destroy the human population to make room for all their newly arrived people
