...a review of El Comprade. Located on Kings Hwy and Beverly across from Broadmoor Garage...near Centenary College. The place has been several failed Mexican restaurants over the last 20 years but now it is home to really good Mexican food.

Positives...

Very friendly staff. They all speak both English and Spanish.
Prices..Cheap to moderate. My lunch was 6 bucks. Some go up to 12.
Menu... more varied than most Mexican places. Lots of stuff like fish soup, at least 10 shrimp dishes that you don't normally find at a Tex Mex place.
Someone next to us got a steaming bowl of great smelling food in a container that looked like a volcano. Wish I had asked what it was.

Negatives... Crowded but I guess that's because it's popular. Tables are close together. Don't go there to have an intimate conversation.
Parking is a problem. Again because it's popular.
Salsa with chips not so good. Too much vinegar and watery.

I'll definitely go again soon to try other items. I also noticed that half of the customers were Hispanic. As is my DIL. If anyone else up here in NW La. has been there I'd love to hear your comments.

i know tacomania was there before they moved across and down the street.

El Compadre is really good and they have some items on their menu that you can't find around here. We need more Mexican places that serve more regional Mexican cuisine rather than the endless Tex-Mex offerings. Have you tried La Jaibita in Bossier? They have pretty good ceviche and Micheladas.

For those on the Bossier side of the Red, try Don Jaunz on Airline dr. Next to Strawns. Made in house flour tortillas, great red and green salsa, two for one drinks, and great baja type Mexican food.

Fish tacos, made with sushi grade tuna, grilled snapper tacos...these are a couple of my fave's on the menu.

Years ago there was a Ninfa's in Shreveport. It was located where Superior Steak House is now. As I remember, it wan't all that great.

molcajete is really just the name for the bowl, but at El Compadre, it comes with chicken, chorizo, fajita steak, some veggies, cheese, and tortillas. The presentation is impressive.

been a while since I lived in the port city, is Nickys still open ? I have had some pretty descent dishes there growing up. La Fiesta in St. Vincent Mall was my 1st mexican platter before going to see caddyshack.

There are at least 2 Nickys still open. But haven't been there in a long time. Do you remember the El Chico's next to Querbes Golf Course?

I still hit a ball into their parking lot every year on the 12th hole, which ironically was called 'the volcano' because of it's elevation.

It is located at 2292 Barksdale Blvd. in Bossier City. It is near the Cascio's grocery between Airline and I-20 on Barksdale.

Here's a local blog about it from a while back:

That's the El Chico's in Madison Park. Do you remember their old bus painted up to look like a wolf? I rented it out for a bachelor party one time and loaded a couple of kegs on it but it broke down on us in Queensborough late that night. I didn't think we would make it out alive.
