My red one was $800 because red is rare and she came from a good line. The black one I bought from some trashy people in pride for $200

So they are a hell of a lot cheaper than labs?

Was the black one from a hunting line or people that had no idea what they were dealing with?

The standard poodle cut (that you see on show dogs) originated to help poodles retrieve in cold water. The cut keeps fur to protect and heat vital organs and joints, while reducing drag in the water to make it easier for the dog to retrieve. Standard poodles are generally very smart and very trainable.

They do look pretty out of place in the backwoods of America these days though.

Was the black one bred for hunting - or - are they smart enough to train without a hunting line?

he said she was the result of 2 family dogs getting "knocked up".. I would assume he meant "locked up", so I would also assume that there's a good chance she was not

bred for hunting

Although, there might have been some kind of "locked and knocked mennah jay troy" goin' on..

Better way of phrasing my question - Was the black one a product of two hunting dogs or just happenstance of two horny dogs.

Poodles were originally bred for retrieving waterfowl. They are (were) a hunting breed.

To me a hunting dog could be half donkey and half chupicabra. If it hunts who cares right?

My mini longhaired Doxie thinks he can hunt.

It's in their genes. Most dogs can hunt unless they have been bread for another purpose.

I'd have to keep it slick sheared just so it wouldn't look like a poodle

I've never hunted with one but they're supposedly great water dogs.

If you just look at the shape of the dog they look like a great dog, but then you slap that goofy fricking fur on them and POOF.
