Infinite Jest is my favorite book of all time.
Also, The Portrait of Dorian Gray is up there too.

Imager
Book 1 in a series. A refreshing take on what life as a "magic user" I.E. "imager" would be like. It's not a walk in the park by any means.
Think of it as an adult Harry Potter series. And before you dismiss it out of hand because of the subject, read some of the reviews. It's a wry study of the human condition...politics, intrigue, society in general.
