Kirby Smart isn't the only Alabama assistant viewed as a hot commodity on the ever-turning coaching carousel.
Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is expected to interview for Southern Miss' head coaching job, according to a report today in the Hattiesburg American.
The pool of candidates, all of whom are offensive coordinators, includes North Carolina's Blake Anderson, Texas Tech's Neal Brown and Oklahoma State's Todd Monken, according to the report.
Whoever wins the job will replace Ellis Johnson, who was fired after just one season. The Golden Eagles went 0-12 one year after it won 12 games under Larry Fedora.
New Auburn coach Gus Malzahn just hired Johnson to be the Tigers' defensive coordinator.
Smart interviewed for the Southern Miss job last season.
After three years as the offensive coordinator at Washington, Nussmeier was hired in January to replace Jim McElwain, who left to become the head coach at Colorado State. The Portland, Ore., native has also spent time at Fresno State, Michigan State and with the NFL's St. Louis Rams. His focus typically centers on the teams' quarterbacks.
Under Nussmeier, Alabama ranks 40th in the nation (4th in SEC) in total offense (439.08 yards per game). The Crimson Tide averages 224.62 rushing yards per game and 214.46 through the air.
Nussmeier's salary for 2012 was $590,000.
"I do think that the offensive staff and Doug has done a really nice job," coach Nick Saban said last month. "The players have made progress and I think the players believe in the coaches and what we’re trying to do

Too early for him at a southern school. Not enough contacts for recruiting.
The candidate from UNC will get the job because of his connection to Fedora

Southern Miss can't afford him. I'm sure he makes more as an OC at Bama ($1-$1.5 mil) than USM can afford to pay.

He's going to get an incentive raise at the end of the year. Still probably under 1 mil. He needs a couple more years.

I heard a rumor the other day that there were whispers going around of Saban encouraging Nuss to go elsewhere. I was told Saban wants to hire Dooley as OC. I didn't mention it before because I thought it was total bs (still probably is). This information makes me think there might be some reality mixed in. At least the part about Nuss being encouraged to leave.

I really fricking hate Nussmeier's playcalling, so I wouldn't mind seeing him go, but please for the love of baby Jesus don't replace him with that fricktard.

He's a new OC and inexperienced as a playcaller. He wasn't going to be paid more than the outgoing OC, Jim McElwain. That being said, few coordinators are paid as much as the 1-1.2 million you were suggesting he made. The guy and Clemson and previously Malzahn at Auburn were the only ones that come to mind.

It kind of was. They couldn't run the ball, even with one of the most experienced O-lines in the country. That resulted in their already thin, crappy D getting worn out even faster than they otherwise would have.
