I am trying to decide on which of these shows I should start watching. I know they are all good, but which one do you think I should start on.
Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, or 24

The only one I've seen episodes of is Dexter. And I liked it a lot, so I would recommend that one.

Both. Picking one is damn near impossible and both are addicting. Dexter starts off faster though if you dont like wading in slowly.

If you want pure entertainment without too much intellectual challenge, watch 24 (5 seasons at least). It is brilliantly done and very addictive. I powered through all 8 seasons on netflix in like 6 months and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
The best of the shows you listed is Boardwalk Empire. It is really a masterpiece on par with the very best of serialized cable TV shows. It is as good as any theatrical release movie of recent years. Powerful and creative.
Dexter is novel and interesting for a while, but ultimately the writers get pretty lazy and fill the script up with too much bull shite. It's good, but third on your list.

I've never seen BE or Dexter, but I've heard good things about BE.
However, I fricking LOVED 24. I think it comes down to how much time you want to devote to it...24 was 8 seasons I believe (and a movie forthcoming  ). BE is only in its second or third season, right? Not sure on Dexter, but it can't be more than 5 or 6 seasons. 24 is 24 episodes times 8 seasons...that's a lot of time to put into something. I will say that seasons 4-6 of 24 were retarded good though, and would be worth watching even if just by themselves.

I've never seen Dexter but heard good things except I've also heard it starts to fall off after a while. I love Boardwalk although I haven't had time to keep up with the current season, but the first season got me hooked pretty quickly. Seen 24 a few times and it does nothing for me

Decided on Boardwalk Empire. I have them all downloaded, so I will likely watch a good bit of the shows mentioned during the holiday's while work is slow.

Boardwalk Empire has 3 seasons and all three are solid.
Dex has 6 or 7 seasons and some are better than others.
it really depends on how much time you want to devote to watching tv. i tend to watch shows 2-3 episodes at a time, especially around the holidays. they get addictive.
i would watch both. just watch dex when you have more time, whether its now or at a different time of year.

I have alot of stuff at work to do that requires me being in front of a computer all day. So having something playing in the background is essential.

I love it. Duchovny plays a struggling writer who is coming off some literary success, but sex/drugs/alcohol define each episode, which always puts a rift between his estranged wife and daughter.
The cast of characters is good and the dialogue is well-written. It's a half-hour show, so can be knocked out in no time. I recommend it to anyone who isn't boring or under 16.
