With LSU/Miles and Bama/Saban, as well as aTM and a resurgent Miss and MSU, I think the SEC West is going to be a boiling caldron for the foreseeable future. Anyway, in a year or two it should no longer be a Bama or LSU entitlement division, just because...

Very pleased with this hire. Can't wait to see how he does.

I think part of the incompleteness has to do with how quickly these new coaches move their teams to the forefront of competition in the SEC West. And whether our present coaches (Miles, Saban, Mullen, Freeze, and Sumlin) can adjust in this emerging new and potentially more highly competitive than ever West world.

I think Bielema is a pretty good hire. If he can produce a physical team like Stanford under Harbaugh and Shaw, I can see Arkansas making some noise in the near future. Bielema needs to stack his staff with people with southern ties though. He did a relatively good job at recruiting second-tier Florida talent at Wisconsin and Arkansas should be a better sell to a kid from the south than Wisconsin.

Would love to see RollbamaRoll make a meltdown for coaching hires. I have seen some good ones.

This is my number #1 red flag with him. What connections does he have in TX,ARK & Mizzou areas?

Rivals [I'm usually not one to simply go off of rankings. But this is still somewhat relevant.]
'13- #23
'12- #56
'11- #40
'10- #87

He was never going to get the top kids out of Florida. However, he needs to be able to recruit a higher quality athlete at Arkansas. I won't discredit his ability to develop talent, but it will be interesting if he can make a connection with some of the kids in the south. Be interesting to see how he fills out his staff.

The West has always been competitive...with a few exceptions. The Mississippi teams seem to be on a roller coaster but they pop up with good team every few years.

Saban and Miles are guys who welcome all challenges and have seen it all. I don't think they're scared.

I think they're both good hires as well. Really impressed and surprised by Bielema. If he can recruit he'll be trouble for the rest of us.

With Gus, I think he can prove to be the offensive counterpart to the D factory at Bama. People haven't forgotten the Cam season. He just needs to find his version of Chief to run the D.

Bielma could go either way, but i don't think he is that good a coach, and i don't think he can play that kind of wisconsin ball with inferior talent in the SEC.

Gus is a terrible hire. HE was at Auburn a few years, and his offense was exposed by good tam whenever someone besides cam newton was at the helm. If you need Cam Newton for your offense to function it isn't a good offense.

Just curious, when exactly was his offense exposed?

disagree. He showed what he can do with premium talent. It'll be his job to bring em in, now. Saban's defense isn't nearly as effective without those 5 star guys he brings in.

Lets not forget, his offense carried that 2010 team. Not much defense on that squad, at least compared to other SEC national championship teams. Malzahn will need to find someone credible to run the D

Agreed.

Tubs left things pretty lean at AU and Gus at least had an O that functioned his first year ('09). I don't think he demands a Cam-style talent to score points. Their '10 team had a great OL (not given enough recognition IMO) but not a lot of playmakers.

They'll score points and I think he'll recruit well. But as the Tiger in Texas notes Gus will need someone to run his D.

I think we're mostly saying the same thing.

Not saying the present West coaches are scared; am wondering if they will adjust their games to a new West reality - or if we'll see a new power-shuffling go on among all in the West.

Me too, honestly. I don't care about AR or MO recruiting ties. MO isn't going to be a huge contributor of talent anyway and we'll get most of the AR kids we want just because we're the instate school.

But TX is huge for us going forward. I was disappointed we didn't hire someone with more of a footprint in that area. However, he does seem to have some success in FL.

One thing that I'm trying to keep in mind is that he's been pretty successful at Wisconsin developing lowly rated classes and putting guys into the NFL (way more than Arkansas' done). I'm excited to see what kind of job he can do at a school that will actually pay his assistants well enough to keep them and that will have world class facilities, which WI evidently doesn't.
