You really should read the Silmarillion.
The stories are more bad arse and epic.
Would not translate into film, though that's what they said once about LOTR.
But in this case, they're probably right.
It would be perfect as a series on HBO or something.
Each chapter could get a full 2 hour treatment.
At least that's how I'd do it.

The Silmarillion is truly epic and tragic at the same time. There is enough information in there to make one movie a year for the next 20 years. I don't think HBO would work due to the large scale battles that take place during the war of jewels. But showing the history of Arda and the Valar would be amazing if done right. Morgoth was a bad mofo and Sauron was his right hand man. It can be a hard book to read, but there is soooo many good stories in there that it's worth the effort.
Jackson did mention once that he would love to explore more of Tolkien's work, but the Silmarillion belongs to the Tolkien estate and apparently those people are huge dicks.

Sauron was Morgoth's bitch.
Yeah, this seems to be the case. That's why they did an end-around with the ROTK appendices stuff in The Hobbit, which includes some Silmarillion info.

i'd settle for a CGI animated series if it were done in a mature manner. if they want to make it for kids, i'd just as soon pass

Morgoth vs. Fingfolin on the big screen would be freaking awesome!

It's actually my favorite Tolkien book but there is no way that it would work on film, or television. Oh well, a man can hope that it will one day be given the film treatment.

Man....that would be awesome. I'd also like to see the destruction of Gondolin on film.
And the Beren and Luthien chapter is near perfection.

Simarillian is a great book! I loved all the backstories that helped shape Middle Earth that I knew from the Hobbit and LOTR

I know Peter Jackson can get carried away with CGI, see King Kong, but even in that, it looks spectacular.
uhh no.
most of the stuff with Kong looked good.
the part where he tosses the girl around the air as he fights the two tyrannosaurus looking things was awful though. She was being rag dolled like crazy and would have snapped her neck so many times.
The dino stampede scene looked like dog shite even when it was first released.
The part where they fall down the hole and start getting eaten by bugs has weak spots as well.
