Question on smoke from fireplace (Posted on 11/29/12 at 9:10 pm)
OT fire making vets, I moved into a two story house with a 42 inch fireplace box with a blower and glass doors. With the doors shut I am getting too much smoke rising to the second story. First story is warm and smells like a fire, second story will give u a head ache. Anything I can do to cure this? I like watching the fire and the blower heats really great, but upstairs makes it unusable.

Smoke is coming out the chimney outside. It isn't enough smoke to set off the smoke alarm, it just makes it uncomfortable because of the smell. It's like the light smoke u have a winter fire burning smell, times ten.

Sounds like you're not moving enough air up the chimney. Try cracking a downstairs window slightly. Help relieve the suction from all that air being pulled up the chimney.

Did you get the chimney inspected? If not, do you know when it was last cleaned?
I would not burn another fire until I was sure that chimney was clean. There could be creosote build-up and you could start a chimney fire.
As to the smoke, most likely negative pressure inside the house. Cold air comes down the chimney forcing smoke into the house until the chimney warms up. Crack a window until it does.
