Should we go two or four stroke? Will be mostly ridden around house (country) and cane fields.... He wants a YZ 85 2 stroke, I hav been looking at crf100. What y'all got to say? TIA

4 stroke. I've had dirt bikes my entire life and the 4 strokes they make these days are awesome. Low maintenance and fast!

I was thinking four stroke also, but I remember my old 250 2 stroke 4 wheeler and that thing was a blast!

Our 15.5 yr old has one, hot piston, big sprocket and all kinds of other stuff done. I don't even get on it. (skeered). Lol. I like 4 wheels personally.

How experienced is he? Once ha lays down a four stroke he's in trouble. Get something he'll grow into. It's a catch 22

Is say moderate experience, I don't get laying down 4 stroke comment. Is it b/c of the weight differential?

Yamaha ttr50. Electric start and has a throttle limiter. I'm a Honda guy, but that bike was perfect for my two boys.

Edit: for a 12 year old, get the ttr 90/100. Whatever they make in that series. Misread the age. My kids were 7 when the got the 50.

No, unless they have changed, they were hell to get restarted. If he is out in the fields riding by himself and he lays it down, not bad, but it dies, it takes a lot to get it cranked again. Maybe things have changed with them. Just from my experience.

YZ would be mostly a speed bike. 4 stroke is better for trails and fields. Less maintenance on the 4 stroke too.

I wouldn't go for the two stroke. He will probably hurt himself pretty quickly and could get frustrated at the how fast it can get out of control.

Look at a 110 or 125 4-stroke. Should last him until he gets a little experience and then go to 2 stroke if he wants to race

No racing... Just cruising with his buddies. I think I've made up my mind on a 4 stroke, any recommendations? About a $2500 budget. New/Used?

Search CL for a Yamaha TTR-125, 110, Suzuki DRZ110, Kawisaki KLX 110 or 140. Maybe a CRF100 or 150. 12yrs old is kind of a transition stage so it is gonna be hard to pick a size

Good bike.

My last one was four stroke. I like both, but prefer the 4. I would shop for the best deal and if I found a steal I would still go back to a 2 stroke.

4 stroke. They can make those scream now. Plus he will be used to that type on engine if he continues riding. You can also stretch the tank a little more and now wake everything in the area up while riding.
