Do Republicans really want to cut spending?

I think the tea-party types like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz really do want to cut spending.

Unfortunately, they are outnumbered by the establishment Republicans who have all the power in the party, who really could care less whether or not spending is cut. They are part of Washington and only care about controlling the purse strings instead of limiting the opening of the purse.

Until we can get the true purist limited government conservatives into positions of power in the Republican Party, we will never be serious about cutting spending. It will always be of the "100 billion dollars over 10 years" bull shite variety.

The Establishment only cares about power for themselves. They have proven that they don't care about this country, or it's Constitution in the slightest. They are pro big government and spending. The only times that they are against spending is when it allows them to posture for their constituency and helps them in the polls.

You mean the racists? The anti-gay bigots? The old white men who want to undo Row and take us back to the days of the robber barons and child labor sweat shops?

You better be prepared to answer those questions because that's the type of opposition they'll face. Unhinged non sequiturs with strangely large bank accounts.

I agree. I think the establishment isn't against government spending, they are just against it when they aren't controlling it.

When the GOP regains power someday, the democrats will complain about their spending too. Not because the GOP is spending, but because they control the spending.

It's a fight over who controls the purse strings, because whoever controls that can pay off their political buddies with jobs and grants.

Both political parties are more interested in raising money and winning elections. To cut spending means taking money and reducing jobs from from someone's district. Money drives politics. It's why we need a balanced approach.

This is my feeling as well, the same holds true for the dems, its like both parties are willing to cut spending if the spending is related to the other party's agenda, what is best for the country never comes in to play. Sickening.

Cutting spending or raising taxes will kill the recovery....which isn't exactly robust to begin with.

You are 100% correct, IMO.

This is purely a function of our federal government being out of scale. The federal government is only there to serve it's players and their customers. The players being the president, both branches of congress, and the judges. The customers being the lobbyist (unions, insurance, oil, lawyers, green energy, etc.).

When the founders made up congress each representative represented 30,000 people from each district. The current ratio is ~725,000 people to 1 representative. That ratio is ridiculous. The people get no representation with that kind of ratio. That is why your vote does not count on a national level and is a ruse to make you feel like you are participating. Do you think the thirteen colonies would have agreed to ratifying the constitution with a ratio of representation of ~725,000 to 1 in 1788?

The point is, we are out of scale. The country is too big.
