aftermarket equipment? did the owner not do his maintenance? BMW owners...
and def not dealers fault, they can only do as much as BMW warranty allows.

I am not surprised BMW told them to get lost.
I had an issue with my subaru, that subaru said was my fault. Three years later they did a recall. I bitched up a storm and got a check from subaru.
Car companies, and dealerships love to screw their customers over.

I have had out of warranty issues and was able to negotiate a 50/50 share of cost with MFG
It is all about negotiation
If the warranty is out legally BMW does not have to do anything- but if you understand the art of negotiation I bet you could get them to work 50/50
