Future of Louisiana's WMA's

How do ya'll think the wma's here will shape up over the next 20-25 years? Jackson-Bienville lost 7,000 acres this year to pvt leases and I've heard stories of others that have done the same recently. I was talking to a guy that works for Weyerhauser (sp) and he said JB will be gone from the public in 3-5 years for sure.
I've always been a public land hunter and would hate my kids to grow up w/o public land to hunt on. It seems like leases are about to go up a good bit also and in 6-8 years when my boys get older it may be hard to afford a lease. I understand the state is short on money so I realize there is more important things for them to put their money on than wma's. So, how do ya'll think this and all of public land hunting in Louisiana will play out over the next couple decades?

from what I understand.. the state rarely paid for leases for WMAs...
the landowners in many cases got significant tax breaks for having their land in the WMA system.
when public land hunting is gone.... hunting will soon follow..

Anyone know what percent of the WMAs are owned by the state vs on leased land?

I probably read it wrong somewhere but wasn't the state paying 1 dollar an acre and the companies and people that owned the land wanted the state to start paying closer to 10 an acre? At least as Jackson-Bienville is concerned? Been awhile since I read it so that may be completely wrong on my end.

People have been donating the hell out of property in the past 10yrs. After being gone from St Tammany for a while I came back and tried to sneak hunt a few old spots only to find out that they were now WMAs

I'll have to ask my mom to be sure of the price as I have no idea as to what the state paid him, but I know that in the mid 90's the state bought my grandfathers farm out in the Spillway and added it to Sherburn. It's what's know as the South Farm Complex on the Sherburn map now. Near Ramah. That was a paradise when I was a kid.

You have no idea. I was 8 when my gramps sold it. He took the offer as it was too bard to make a consistent crop due to the water. But from what I understand he didn't have much of a choice. Not sure of the whole story though. We used to have plenty of gator tags, coons and crawfish for thanksgiving out there. As well as tons of deer. I'd like to go see it again, but I wouldn't know how to even get there now.

East to get there, I normally make a couple of hunts there a year only about 35 minutes from downtown Baton Rouge.

Oh I know where it is. Even though I was a kid I still have then entire old layout in my head. I don't think they let you in there from Ramah though? Wouldnt I have to go in from the main gate? I've always stayed away from public land.

Did it flood much when you were younger?
They flooded a couple of years ago when the river went up like all hell.
