This is the tree in my buddy's backyard, and he says its never bloomed in the 5 yrs they've been there.

It's about the size of a softball, it taste like an orange when you bite into it and a lemon after you swallow....

The fruit looks like a Meyer lemon. An ugly one. Taste described sounds like a Meyer lemon as well. He should fertilize that baby.

Skin is too thick and the fruit is too high in the tree for a Meyer lemon. They grow low and have paper thin skin. Could just be some bastard lemon/orange.

looks like a lemon tree where the graft died and the fruit started growing on the wild side.

The tree itself looks odd. My bet is on root stock. That would explain the lack of fruit. Consider yourself lucky the fruit is even edible.

It's a sour orange.

ETA: There are several varieties.

Oh
He has a kumquat tree about 15 foot away that produces thousands every fall ...

Think that could have something to do with it?
(eta: he had just picked the ones he could reach and filled up two 5 gallon buckets!)

It's one of the most upright citrus trees I've seen. You can check low on the trunk and see if it has a grafted joint or elbow. If it does, it's producing some known variety most likely. If no visible graft line, most likely overgrown rootstock.
