Frank Herron at 6'4" and 236LBs with reported 40 of 5.06. Will he be a DE or maybe LB? Is 5.06 typical speed for our DE's. How quick are Montgomery and Mingo?

wow, that's slow. There ain't no way he's a LB with that speed. IIRC, Mingo is around a 4.5 and Sam is a little bit slower. 5.06 would be VERY slow for a DE

The newest measurements of Herron have him at 6'5" and he played at around 250 lbs this year. From his highlights I dont see speed being that slow. He plays basketball so hes gonna drop probably 15 lbs but he is very athletic and def. a defensive end who can get to the QB.

Those were just the numbers off of rivals when I was just looking at some of the guys we have committed. And that one just struck me as not very typical of the DE's Chavis seems to go after. But then again, Rivals isn't the end all be all of accurate information. Especially if they aren't Bama commits.

That's what Rivals has reported, doesn't mean it's true/accurate. Notice how it doesn't have a check mark next to it, means it wasn't authenticated. I've read somewhere he runs around a 4.7, which is plenty fast. The 40 yard dash for D linemen is a dumb measurement of quickness. 10 yard dash/split is what it's all about. Measuring the quick burst of the line.

quote:

One of the biggest misconceptions that emerge from the NFL scouting combine each year is the importance of 40-yard dash times. The 40 is the considered the glamour event of the combine, and every year NFL executives, scouts, draftniks and fans get carried away by some of the mind-boggling times. This often puts too much value on a player’s ability to run fast more than it does his pure football talent. Am I saying that the testing at the combine isn’t important? No, but the test needs to be evaluated more from a football-related standpoint. One of the most important and consistently overlooked measurements at the combine is the first 10 yards of the 40, known as the 10-yard split. This is simply a measurement to see how fast a prospect can cover 10 yards. It’s great to see how fast someone can run 40 yards, but how often in an NFL game are players required to cover that distance on one play? A more reasonable measurement, and a better indicator of “football speed,” is 10 yards.

If I had to guess Herron would probably be around a 4.8 forty. Hes not as slow as above 5.0 but hes not going to be Mingo fast. Mingo is a freak and could have played S at LSU if he wanted to.

I put my trust into Chavis to know talent more than Rivals scouting. If the Chief wants him, it's good enough for me.

Didn't Mingo also run track in high school and weighed something like 195LBs when he came in?

Based on the few clips I've seen of him performing at camps, he doesn't need speed to beat lineman anyway. He is plenty strong and athletic.

Why people still use Rivals is beyond me. All the people who were actually worth anything quit and went to 247 over the past two years.

Rivals is becoming the new Scout.

Hey I'm not questioning his talent or athletic ability or potential greatness as another stellar off the charts DE at LSU. Like I said, I trust The Chief. The Chief knows what he needs for his defense.

yeah I doubt anyone here knows his true 40 time and Rivals certainly doesn't. He's a basketball player and as a prospect is known for his athleticism and upside so I wouldn't put much stock in it.

If we made DEs have mingos speed to get in, then we would not have any defensive ends

He was unblockable with his speed rush at the Nike combine this summer against the best o-lineman in the country. Not worried at all what he runs the 40 in

How many 40 yard deep sacks happen? As long as he is quick for 10 yards, has strong hands, long arms, and some strength he will be just fine.
