| Why is it ok to steal media? (Posted on 11/26/12 at 3:12 am)
I'm sorry if this is Germans. Why do most of us consider it acceptable to steal creative property? I do it, you do it, most do it. There's a strong online presence that believes it's a right. I think shoplifters are shitty people, but the only real difference between those of us that steal music or what not online and shoplifters is shoplifters have a sack and might go to jail. It's easy to steal online. Is it ok because it's easy, and everyone does it? Does the fact that the theft is easy and anonymous make it OK? I'm interested in hearing someone who steals most of their shite online explain how they are better than a common thief. I ask all this as I'm halfway through 'Homeland' on projectfreetv(watch all your favorite tv-shows and movies online 4 FREE), so I'm as guilty as anyone.

the internet is a monster you can not contain. The only thing I think you can do is stop making dvd's and only use pay per view to watch movies. I believe there is some sort of software that doesn't allow you to record while watching a movie.

It's called sharing. Sharing is caring. You aren't physically stealing. Fair use brah. So if I loan out my digital media for you to borrow, how is that any different? You still get to see for FREE. Are you such an awful person then, because you didn't go buy it yourself?

if you feel so bad about it, why don't you just pay for it then?

because they have a shitty return policy only a few houses finance everything, and I pay for garbage, that if it were a meal, jeans, computer...would return to the retailer. So...I pay and then return the crap(they don't lose), until I find something I enjoy and was worth what I paid. pretty simple really

I think it's unacceptable to try and make a profit off of someones creative property.. but to view it from an alternative source.. nah.. or listen to it.. nah. Like I said, how is borrowing physical content any different? You can listen to music for free all day long on the radio.. How's that any different in terms of principle? You can go watch whatever at a friend's house if you don't have it. I still believe that if I appreciate an artist or entertainer or whatever the entertainer is enough then I will put physical money support towards it. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Just trying to be honest. The internet is a beast, the entertainers are still making absurd moneys (as they should), especially in advertising, simplicity, you aren't physically taking away locally from someone, and free and fair use act. I actually don't even care to pirate (not purposely at least); I pretty much spend money on my cable, netflix, internet, etc. A lot of the stuff is just out there and very viewable.. without it, it's not exactly a necessary.. Not something people would take physically. It's all just forms of entertainment to us.. If I believe in something enough tho I will support it like I said. It also depends exactly what types of content we are even talking about here. Some companies do not object to fair share, because in a way it's a good test to see if you want to purchase to own for yourself. Although most would.. In short term - Going in and actually physically taking something away from someone vs partaking in sharing/viewing content with another individual who already has the content.. IDK.. but I understand the double standard of the point you are trying to make.

It's not. A lot of people work hard on a movies and records. It's true that many of them get paid whether you buy that product or not, but many who worked on or invested money in that project depend on sales. Accessing that media for free steals from them. It's no different than walking out of best buy with a bunch of DVDs under your coat.

For me at least, any work that deserves my money will get it. I may rip off some films sometime, but if I liked the film enough, I'll go see it a second time in theaters or at least when it comes out on DVD.

I don't think it makes it ok, but as technology changes, so should your business model and pricing, or consumers are going to look for a way around you. Do you remember paying 17 + for a CD with one good song on it? What we're really seeing is a massive shift in leverage to the consumer, which I think is a good thing.

Definitely, as well as back when almost all Blue Ray's were about $30. Pretty much everybody at the bottom of the industry gets paid regardless, the people who benefit from massive sales numbers are the actors/directors/singers.. who still make millions, so most people don't feel so bad. Not to mention the fact that you aren't actually removing anything from the site you download it from, you're copying it. I hate those stupid arse commercials "You wouldn't download a car would you?" frick yeah I would.

They've managed to orient the law to paint this picture of sharing as stealing but its just not that open and shut. As long as the original online provider paid for it why can't they do what they like with their property? I understand it really takes a bite from the entertainment industry but if I buy a DVD its my fricking DVD.

Because the actual owners don't package it properly. They make you pay for things you don't want. That's looked at as stealing in some people's minds. What's good for the goose... Amiright?

Call me cynical but I think stealing anything would be acceptable to most people if the risk reward ratio was at the right level. From the richest to the poorest people. I think it's just a part of human nature. Hell, broader than that - a part of the nature of any living thing.
