Because they were on like the 2 yard line. Odds were better of them scoring on 4th down than them getting back down there (at least that was his thinking, I guess).

If he hadn't blow 6 hours down there, the FG was fine. And yes, the FG would also keep the game possible to win, and therefore your players would still believe and play hard.
However, its a lot easier to score a TD and then get a FG with a short clock than to do the reverse.
Dumbass wasted so much time he had to make a judgment call about how his team would respond.

Do you want a 99.9% shot to kick from 2 yards and a 5% drive down the field to the endzone, or a 50% chance to score a TD and 40% chance to get a fg kick from 40 yards (which works about 70% of the time). Not saying those are the correct numbers, but if I'm right it's 5% vs 14%
That's the logic.
The problem was running multiple times down two scores late in the 4th.

usc had a better chance of scoring on a 40 yd td pass than they did on a 2 yard run. kick the field goal and at least give yourself a chance at winning the game
