| What's the point of getting a BluRay DVD ROM when you can't play them on the PC? (Posted on 11/22/12 at 11:03 am)
So you spend all this money to get a BluRay DVD ROM and you can't get software to play BluRay movies on your computer...Windows doesn't support any BluRay player and there are no codecs or BluRay players online that will allow you to play your movies. Why did you get the drive in the first place? To prepare for the future of storage?

What are you talking about? PowerDVD will play them just fine. It's probably the best program out there, and a retail boxed Blu-Ray drive will almost always come with OEM software to play Blu-Ray movies. I watch and burn Blu-Rays on my PC all the time.

This makes sense, but I think that BluRay disks are continuously released with new encryption to make it hard to be played and copied on PCs. I don't think my drive came with software to play the BluRay disks. Power DVD doesn't play BluRays on your comp unless you pay for it. Defeats the purpose of an internal BluRay player.

there is a reason OEM drives are cheaper than retail - they assume you already have the necessary cables and software.

But you have this storage media that has proliferated and taken over how we view movies, and windows doesn't have a feature that allows anyone to view them? They require you get third party software, of which they do not recommend customers to do in any case?

every operator of a computer on planet earth uses 3rd party software of some form, blu ray is no different.

Where do they state that getting third party software is not recommended? There are a lot of software solutions and hardware support features that windows doesn't have out of the box. It's the nature of operating systems that have a wide variety of end user types. Windows 7 supports DVD playback right out of the box via windows media player. But, did you know that almost all the versions of Windows 8 do not? Crazy, right? Is windows recommending we don't seek third party software for that? Of course not.

Agreed. It's just weird that entertainment industry storage and playback standard isn't supported by the leading software companies. How long did it take DVDs to get treated fairly when they came about in the CD-focused market?
