This afternoon to have some meat for the winter. There was two large does in the field and one smaller doe(no spots but clearly a baby). The baby seemed to be keeping to one particular doe (not the one I shot) the entire time they ate ( about 20 min). I decided to go ahead and take the other doe. Dropped her with a neck shot. What I feel terrible about is the other large doe took off into the woods and the smaller fawn stopped at the edge of the field and stared at the lifeless doe in the field for like 15 seconds. I felt terrible ( thinking that this could have been its mother.) it continued to stare and then snorted and ran off into the woods after the other doe. I've always heard that fawns down south will hook up with other does and survive, but seeing that made me feel terrible for a minute.

Your mistake... not shooting the fawn. Good tender eating there.

Shot many a doe that left a little one behind. Hunting is some real world shot, brah. That's why there are so few democrats in the woods.

No doubt I have no problem killing deer but this one tugged at my heart for a min or two while the little fawn stood there. I swear In my head I could hear the little thing crying out "get up mom it's time to go come on" hated it haha

When u cleaned her did she any milk in her bags. If you didn't notice any milk then she wasn't nursing. So the fawn should be just fine.

I'll have to ask the processor. Killed her late and they are just up the road. Had them clean the deer this time.

Did the same thing last weekend. Two does with two yearlings/fawns. No spots or anything. I was tempted to take a little one like I did last year but I wanted more meat. Took the biggest one.

Look at it this way, she fulfilled her potential and passed on her genes. He fawn was raised by a successful doe. It will be fine.

I know that's the case and it will be fine (as many lifelong hunters have told me). Just hated watching it happen lol

Just wait til you shoot a doe and the baby runs off for a few minutes then comes back to the lifeless body of her mother....that is a bit hard to watch

I kinda felt bad myself last weekend.. Big doe and 4 point came n field. Decided to take doe. Shot was around 200 yards free handed, hit little high n snapped back. She hits ground n starts bleating 4 point just staring at her, then he walked off. I get down and she is trying to crawl off so i put one in her heard. Felt bad, never had that happen before. Then to too it off i went and got atv and came back, and 4pt was back in field looking at her

O well she will eat good, it happens

Dude was probably pissed that you cock blocked him and was wanting to see if he could maybe still get a warm piece before it was too late.
