The LSU Tigers (3-0) scored over 100 points for the first time since November 2005 as they beat the late surging Demons (3-1) 102 to 95. Shavon Coleman led the team with 22 points in his second straight 20-point game. Three other players scored in double figures; Johnny O’Bryant (13 pts, 6 reb), Charles Carmouche (19 pts, 4 ast, 3 stl), and Anthony Hickey (21 pts CAREER HIGH, 7 reb, 6 ast, 5 stl). The Tigers shot 32 of 66 from the floor (48.5%), 9 of 25 from beyond the arc (36%), and 29 of 51 from the charity stripe (56.9%).

LSU looked to be in control up over 20 points in the second half before slowing the pace of the game. The Tigers tried to hold the ball rather than attack on offense and it backfired. The pressure of Northwestern was able to affect the Tigers and a slow but continual comeback occurred. The Demons had the deficit down to 4 points before the Tigers were able to start hitting free throws.

The game was plagued by foul trouble. Every LSU forward ended the game with at least 4 personal fouls; besides Jalen Courtney who did not play. Note: I must eat crow. Andrew Del Piero gave the Tigers strong minutes. He deserves my apology as well as anyone who I have chastised for believing he is the answer. Del Piero came in with 10 minutes left in the first half and scored 4 points, had a block, and 2 rebounds in the first half. He finished the game with 6 minutes of very important time logged. I am not sure why Courtney did not play but Jones did say that everyone was a little dinged up from a hard week of practice.

While the free throw shooting was less than spectacular (29 of 51), the team hit 10 of their last 14 to put the game away. The Tigers came into the game 345th out of 346 and leave the game 343rd in the country at 51.6% on the year. The Tigers continue to be near the top in Steal % stealing the ball on 17.5% of possessions (6th in nation), and offensive rebound %; 49.6% of missed shots offensively rebounded (4th in country).

The Tigers next game is on Saturday, Nov 24th in the PMAC at 7PM vs Mississippi Valley State.

Another entertaining game from a fans perspective. Re: del Piero- the last 2 games he is playing with more confidence. I don't know if it's better technical coaching or just the coaches having more confidence in him, but he has stepped up. It also doesn't hurt that the crowd gets fired up when he is in the game.

As I've told everyone I've talked to about the team, they are fun to watch. They will have growing pains, but I am pleasantly surprised at how quickly the team has adapted to the new schemes and style of play. The future is bright for LSU hoops, and all things considered, the present ain't so bad, either.

Well you need stats for them to look half decent. Its time for them. Will continue to gain strength as we add more games.

I want to note how ridiculous Anthony Hickey has been to start this season...

Hickey - 12pts, 4rebs, 6asts, 1.67to, 4.33stls

Simpy incredible.

100 points is quite a feat, especially if you are playing a slow paced style which LSU has played since I can remember.

Although this game had it's disappointing aspects, poor free throw shooting, getting in foul trouble, letting Northwestern come back instead of finishing the blowout we had going, I think this team continues to show promise.

Anthony Hickey continued to show us his great potential. All this kid needs is more consistency and a little more experience and he will be an all SEC point guard.

Carmouche has been a huge surprise to me. He has been solid as a rock and has anchored this young team with his veteran coolness.

The last two games has seen Coleman come into his own. He is more than living up to his advance press so far. Amazing rebounder and inside scorer for his size.

JOB has undeniable talent but I think he has to get smarter in when and how he uses it. The most important is that he has to eliminate any silly, stupid fouls so he can stay in the game for us. I am also not a fan of his taking three pointers although he can occasionally make one.

We already have some great three point shooters. Carmouche, Hickey, Stringer, Coleman, Morgan and Hammink have all shown they can hit them when we need them. I have said this team will live and die on three pointers and I still think this is true.

I knew with our lack of big men that Del Pierro would have to give us some minutes but never dreamed that he would do as well as he has so far. I think we are seeing the result of some very hard work in the gym. He just needs to play within himself and let the game come to him and not try to do too much.

Overall this is just a fun team to watch. Love the uptempo style and much improved shooting from last year. They will have their ups and downs but with Johnny's coaching I think we will see steady improvement.

I believe I heard CP3 on CST last night say that Del Piero would get a look or a shot in the European league just based off his height. Would be nice to see him play well this season. Noticed he likes to foul -- Had 4 or so within 5 minutes.

- FG shooting (including 3's) continues to be pretty good. Will it continue when they have to go on the road?

- Coleman has been very versitile. He's been able to get points inside and out. It will get much tougher to score inside once SEC play starts, but at 6'5, he's very "crafty" around the basket.

- Much to my shock, Tuba played some very good minutes. At 7'+, if he can just affect a few shots and grab a couple of rebounds here and there that will be a great boost to this team.

- Free Throws That's one area that's all on the players. They've got to get in the gym on their own and put in the work to get better. Damn near cost LSU the game last night.

- At times, LSU looked God-awful and lazy trying to in-bound against the press. It seemed like every in-bound pass went right to the corner, thus allowing NSU the opportunity to trap. For the most part, Hickey was able to beat the trap, but against better more athletic teams, this could spell trouble.

we've got to be able to shoot better FTs - we should be around 70% at least!

With the fouling thing, to be fair the refs were calling way too many fouls on both teams last night. Two of Andrew's four were very questionable.

The ref's were garbage last night, for both teams.

This team is fun to watch and will win some games. We have the ability to go on scoring runs.

Hickey is simply getting better and better.
Stringer provided a huge spark when we needed it last night.
Tuba also provided huge minutes due to the foul trouble.
As much as I cussed Ludwig last night, he does little things that helps this team. But, he must get more aggresive around the ball.
Carmouche will prove to be a huge pickup. His veteran savy is much needed on this team.
Coleman has been better than expected.
Morgan had an off night shooting but I like his play.
Hammink wasn't very good last night, let's call it a freshman night for him.
JOBIII has to stay out of foul trouble. We will need him down low against better teams.
Collins didn't play much, but I think he'll turn out to be a good one.

If this team continues to improve, they'll make a little noise in the SEC. NIT is a good possibility, maybe even NCAA's if they can correct some mistakes and shoot FT's better.

getting in foul trouble,

While I agree, I do not think that last night's game should be looked at in terms of fouls. It seemed like the refs called fouls on every other possession. I think I remember there being 40 fouls called early in the second half. That is crazy.

At least a shot.. with his size, all it takes is a little coaching to be effective.
