| Hornets and lack of recent defense (Posted on 11/19/12 at 10:16 am)
LINK Nola.com story. Talks about how the Hornets have dropped to 15th in the league in D after allowing 100 points in 3-straight games.
quote:
In their 117-113 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at the Bradley Center, the Hornets allowed 13 pointers,
Didn't know there was a new 13 pointer allowed in the league now, though.

Kiss of death this season. Really puts your team in a hole when you give these up.

I think part of it has to do with being such a young team with guys needing to learn proper rotations and assignments. We also lost a lot of defense and experience with Ariza and Okafor and we don't have a perimeter defender to cover the other team's quick players, which is why we were killed 3 games in a row by Harden, Westbrook and KD, and Ellis and Jennings. I thought Aminu could fill that role but his perimeter defense has been lacking so far. It's just another reason that we badly need Gordon back.

they didn't even combine to play a full season last year, IIRC. so that's not really a good excuse. one problem is that the teams the hornets were playing got extremely hot. now whether that was because the Hornets D was lacking or just them getting hot is open to debate. there were a lot of shots that were well defended in the big quarters that the other team just made somehow. but there were also a few blown assignments. rotation defense seems to be a problem right now. you're definitely right about youth killing the hornets. over time, they will pick it up. is Gordon known to be a good perimeter defender?

Sounds like an old Rock N' Jock basketball game. Makes me think, what about the New Orleans Violators for a team name? Team colors can be an OPP Orange and white.

Davis, beyond blocks, really hasn't been that good on D either. He has looked a bit lost at times.

It's a direct result of playing great scoring wings. Harden, Westbrook, Durant, Martin, Jennings, Ellis. Our wing defenders are failing us. They can't stay in front of their man so we have to commit extra men to them when they put the ball on the floor, and as a result they have to leave the three point line and it's resulting in open looks. Basically Monty is banking on the fact that teams shoot a lower percentage from three than they do in the paint.

Yep. Westbrook had a solid night in assists, but gravy was surprisingly great a curbing westbrook's scoring. We just got killed by Ibaka/Durant/Kmart

This. When the Luke Ridnours of the world run rampant on us, then i will be overly concerned. At this juncture, our main problem seems to be rotations. I fully expect monty to correct these problems.

Well yea My point was that we kept westbrook in check fairly decently throughout the game.

If they can't hold the other teams to under 34% from 3 it makes no difference. They need to chase teams off the 3, forcing long 2s. Edit: OP article is flawed. Points per game is not a true barometer of team defense. The Hornets will usually come out well there because they play at one of the slowest paces in the league. TP should be using points per 100 possessions, not ppg. Hornets are tied for 24th by that metric according to Hollinger.

LINK NBA.com uses the per 100 possessions and we are 13th in Offense and 23rd in Defense,we were also 28th in pace
