Thank you. I'm in public accounting and I make less than the fry cook on an hourly wage basis. Please bitch more about how bad teachers have it.

One of my best friends got out of the Army and is a teacher and says it's great. He says as long as you are proactive on your lesson plans and work it doesn't run you over. Worst part of the job is dealing with all the peers who complain about their jobs all the time when they still get all those days off.

Cops salary might not be overpaid but their unions have gotten them some ridiculous retirement benefits.

I think that everyone has their opinions about law enforcement and teachers, but most can agree on paying the good ones more and getting rid of the bad ones.

The truth is, the bad ones get paid as much as the good ones, and the good ones, which the new crop should be getting better and better as time progresses, get treated the same as the bad ones, but get paid less. Unions are what is giving teachers bad names with the populace.

You know a good teacher when you see one. Likewise, you know a good cop when you see one.

I can agree with this. My problem with teachers (and the school system as a whole) is that they are never happy. Either you're a parent who is a POS because you have nothing to do with your child's education or you're a POS because you're too involved (me). They want to call the shots and don't like being told that doesn't work for your kid. I always want to laugh at open house every year when they give the little speech about how they LOVE parent involvement. No they don't. They love the parents who volunteer at the book fair and make copies. They don't actually want you involved in the education part.

We pay in to the pension plan involuntarily. And there is no gold plated retirement after 20 years.

Most full time employees have 120-140 days off with weekends and vacation/holidays.

Teachers and police officers if they are good. There's way to many teachers who don't do their job. 12 hour days are really common in football and wrestling season. But, you have to bust butt in teh classroom and on the field/mat. They are the ones complaining nonstop that give the rest of us a bad name.

To all you complaining teachers... we took this job not for the money but b/c we love teaching. We put in extra time and don't get paid for it.... so what. If you want us to get more $$$ everyone needs to pull their weight.

Yeah, but they work from sun up to sun down.

The work is concentrated.

9-5 with the occasional late night is the same as 6:30am to 4:00pm with a couple days of grading papers, lesson planning, setting up labs, and meetings after school.

But, like I said earlier. There are way to many teachers who don't pull their weight. They show up with the kids and leave at the same time. I'm glad i'm at a school now where that doesn't happen. In the south especially, we have to find away to get more college grads in the classroom who can make a difference. $$ is the easiest way.

Yes except your average teacher doesn't get to work at 6 30 and most leave before 4. And setting up labs and grading essays? not every teacher teaches high school honors biology lab and not every teacher is an english or history teacher. You people are using huge generalizations for your arguments.

The thing that is wrong with teachers these days is your average college student who is trying to be a teacher is only doing it because they think it is easy and they get all that time off. They complain now because they have a slacker mentality

You can't be serious.

Why did you exclude nurses while you were at it? They work their asses off and help a lot of people as well.

I never appreciated teachers until I started subbing. We are at a small private school, so my opinion might be skewed, but I say they all need to be making twice what they do. They work their butts off, have to motivate children to learn, and deal with all the whiney parents who think their kid is never wrong.

The problem for most teachers - especially those that complain - is that they have poor classroom management. So they think kids are difficult to deal with and make their life miserable. They lack compassion and people skills, so they think parents are devils that hamper their ability to teach. They waste time complaining about their job or gossipping to their friends. They're unorganized, so when they try to get their head above water, they can't because they can't find anything on their desk.

State law enforcement are a privileged class. State Police sets the bar because they alternate between providing muscle and hinting blackmail at the governor and legislature. Their pay, perks, retirement, equipment, etc. are the envy of every other. Then all the rest of state (and local) law enforcement base their envy and greed off of what State Police has strongarmed for themselves. The pettiness and jealousy among law enforcement personnel, regarding their benefits, status, jurisdiction, and duties is second only to the rivalries between teenage girls.
