So I was greeted by an unpleasant surprise this morning

when I arrived at my stand. I got in my stand about 530 and the woods were dead silent. I'm sitting there waiting for daylight and I see what looked like vehicle lights coming toward me through the woods. I'm like WTF b/c I'm a good ways into the woods and there are no roads back there suited for a vehicle. It's nothing but a pine thicket back there. Then I hear the sound of heavy machinery and I knew exactly what was going on. Daylight finally breaks and my suspicions were confirmed. So I now get to spend opening morning watching them log up to the edge of my foodplot. Oh the joy of hunting a timber lease. How's everyone else's morning?

Timber companies grow timber to harvest, replant and grow it again.
I would not say that is devastating timber, at least not in the Southeast. May be a different story in some parts of California and/or the northwest, where it is a different type of tree that takes longer to mature.

I call BS. I watched what they did to the people next to me. 15 years later and they have little to nothing growing. I get my place cut every 20-25 years that is select cut only and I go in with them to make sure they are not raping my place.

Maybe they will scare something your way. On the plus side. Deer seam to love cutover the next year.

Hunt on the ground. I've killed far more deer sitting in a lawn chair or against a tree than out of a stand.

While I have seen some stupid foresters, most of them work on referrals so they try and do the best job possible. That wouldn't cut it today, and I can say with 100% certainty that it would be a logger that did it if it turned out like that. A lot of people don't think about it, but loggers act like foresters sometimes with no idea what they are doing.
Pine trees are treated as a crop species generally, but always with the intention to maximize profit over the long run. Hardwoods are very tough to predict. I have seen Two foresters with combined 80 yrs experience argue about what is best for a piece of property. Most of the time, hardwood forestry for growth and hardwood forestry for wildlife food are one in the same

Depends if it is Guatemalans or a machine. Some people use machines, but they are much slower, less, effective, and cost more than the South Americans. Also depends on the location. More companies = lower cost
As far as specific prices, I never replanted them so IDK, only thinned and clearcut government property. I worked for a hardwood timber company, and you don't replant those. The pine trees we usually just cut were poles,or did really big contracts for the government

My BIL bales hay on my property, but not sure how much longer he will keep doing it. I would love to put some cows on it, but it's almost to far for to be going check them a few times a week. Just getting ideas.
