Interesting article from Rivals today wondering if Manziel would be on the bench this year. I don't think it is premium, so here is the link:
Johnny on the bench?

If you can't get to the article, here is an excerpt:

quote:

Manziel finished as the No. 14 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 45 player in Texas, both obvious misjudgments so far. However, the Class of 2011 is also shaping up as a fantastic group of dual-threat quarterbacks, with Marcus Mariota, Teddy Bridgewater, Brett Hundley and Braxton Miller ranked in front of Manziel. Think of this -- Manziel and Mariota both committed to the Ducks in the summer of 2010 within three days of each other. Manziel obviously flipped to the Aggies, but it would be very interesting to see which of the two would be leading the high-octane Ducks offense right now. While Manziel has accounted for 33 total touchdowns and has thrown for 18 with six picks, Mariota is the nation's leading passer and has thrown 28 touchdown passes against five picks while rushing for another three scores. Oddly enough, Oregon had another quarterback commitment that year who was ranked higher than either in Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna dual-threat Jerrard Randall. However, Randall didn't qualify by Signing Day and when he did finally achieve his score, Oregon said thanks, but no thanks. LSU signed Randall in March and, coincidentally, it was Randall who imitated Manziel in LSU practices leading up to the Tigers' win over the Aggies. So would one of the leading Heisman candidates in the country be a bench warmer in Oregon? You be the judge.

It is amazing to me that, at one point, Oregon had Manziel, Mariota, and Randall all committed. However it is more interesting to me that Jerrard Randall was ranked higher than either of the other two. With Rivers backing Mett and two incoming high profile QB's joining the Tigers next year, I wonder if Randall will ever see the field for LSU.

Chip might be the GOAT of qb recruiting, he had all 3 committed at some point

At the MSU game this past weekend I saw Mett, Rivers, and our walk-on Kragthorpe all warming up with passes before the game but not Randall. Did he not dress b/c of injury?

Who said that?

Just making an observation. I let the coaches coach! No way I bench Mett! I have no idea how good Randall is in practice or what kind of attitude he has. LSU has great running backs. We don't need a running QB who could get hurt at any time. I would like to see a little more mobility from Mett, but as long as he gets protection and releases quickly, no problem.

I love where the Tigers are right now, just wish Mett had gotten more reps last year so he would have been more prepared at the start of this year.

Possible move to WR? It's been rumored for a long while.

LSU doesnt run the spread, which I'm guessing is Randall's strength if he was recruited by Kelly.

I dont understand when people think you can just take a player's performance on one team and think it would be the same on another team. Manziel or Mariota would probably not be Heisman candidates at LSU because LSU doesnt run those kinds of offenses.

Randall will probably transfer after this year. Problem solved.

Note that no one is questioning why Randall is riding the bench behind Mett. Also doesn't mention where Randall ranked in relation to Manziel and Mariota.

Given what we know about Miles and the QB position, I have no doubt that Manziel would have been on the bench behind Mett. He might be ready to take over by the start of the 2014 season, which would give him two years to start for the Tigers. It may have impacted the current QB's that are committed to the Tigers as well. Although he is thriving as a Redshirt Freshman starter, it is not ideal and most of those underclassmen do not do as well as Manziel.

Id really like to see Randall get some time as a bit of a wild card. He's immensely talented and could bring a completely different skillset to the table for a couple times per game

I thought Randall looked great in the Spring Game, except for the part where he had to run to the sidelines after each play to get the next one. Hopefully, he's learned the offense better since the spring. But, if he can't learn the hand signals, he's basically the perfect scout team qb.

What quarterback wouldn't want to play in that offense?
