This is a favorite of mine:

Heroes of Iwo Jima

It was produced about five years before the movie version of Flags Of Our Fathers (the author of that book is interviewed here)

The film goes into deep detail about the two flag raisings, as well as the lingering controversy over which men should be credited.

How about The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?

I know the movie tv board loves it .

Third reich: The rise and fall. 3 hours. They show it on the history channel sometimes.

Yeah, I like the German side of it. The home movies and letters.

Youtube has a lot of good ones. Too many to name, just search for WWII documentaries and have at it.

The Russian side documentary is called "The Unknown War". 20-part documentary history in film of the World War II conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Burt Lancaster does a fine job as the narrator behind the footage.

Like all Russian tells of the war, take it with a grain of salt.

"Victory at Sea" is one of the best ever made, and one o fthe longest. 26 episode series about naval combat during World War II.
