I'm in my third year of trying to call. In between this season and last is when I really practiced a good bit. I feel like I can call pretty good but I have yet to wrap a group of ducks in. I've never called a lot on the water, just when they are off a little ways and not headed our way. I don't call just when we are sitting with nothing in sight.

I got an app on my phone that I try to imitate the calls and feeding calls.

Is it just practice? Having to see enough ducks in a season and keep trying to see if you got it? I don't want to be out there just scaring ducks off. But I'm the only one in our group that hunt together that can call/remotely call.

Part practice and part observation.

Go hunting with some old veteran hunters who speak duckenese. Watch them and pick their brain. After a while you get to the point where you can think like the duck and almost speak their language.

Practice every chance you get.

I used to call every time I would drive somewhere.

One day it just all seemed to "click"

I have come to the realization that I am tone deaf, I'm not going to get better, so I just keep quiet...

Practice cadence

Learn the basics. Practice making good 'quacks'. Eventually you can string the quacks together (using the cadence that you practiced above)

Only call at wing tips

Don't get caught up in the long, drawn out hail calls. Most of them are overly dramatized and can hurt you more than help you in certain situations. The ole KISS method

And of course, tag along and listening to good callers always helps

This. The guy that blows too much is only going to flare ducks and piss off people he's hunting with.

Learn to do basic, good-sounding quacks, and then add a 5 note call, and learn when to call, and you'll be set

A friend we invited to go with us Saturday brought his call. So we're sitting around the camp fire Friday night and I say I'm not going to call much at at, just if I see em off in the distance or if they fly by and don't see our spot. I kept hinting at that.

So we get out in our spots at 5:30 in the morning and get settle in. Shooting time comes and it's been maybe five minutes in and my buddy goes "QUACK QUACK quack quack quackquackquackquaaaaa". Then he kind of whispers (we were all about 15 ft from each other) "I'm just trying to get em stirred up chase". did that ALL morning. Drove me and another friend of mine freking crazy.

That's one thing I have always known, less is more.

Quality over quantity

Just see what works, experiment out there if you're by yourself. During the offseason go out there and see if you can call any in

I would have to say finding a call you can use is pretty big. I've been calling ducks for a long time and would consider myself pretty good but there are calls I absolutely cannot blow. Also doing what I've been doing for the last 2 hours, calling at my steering wheel

I've got a few pretty nice calls. I think I'm getting better with the call without the rounded lip. If that makes sense. Id post a pic of I wasn't on my iPad. The call is kind of big itself but it's thinner at the end and doesn't flair out.

Swich calls. If you dont like the results switch calls and blow from your diaphram. I have a primos woodduck call, a duck commander mallard call. A true shot raspy call, a primos whistle that all ducks love. take your time. blow from your belly not your cheeks. find something that works for you and put it in your car. and just take your time

Solid info.

Try other duck calls too! Some take more air then others. Also, along with were you are hunting, different calls sound different as in marsh hunting or timber hunting.

Practice, observation, and remember you hunt in Louisiana. Those birds have been called and shot at all the way from Canada. Don't expect magic, less is more

Lonesome hen call. Extend that first note and watch those wings lock up! Agree with calling as little as possible. If they want to come in with no calling at all, all the better.

Agree. The less calling the better. I only use the call to get their attention. If they're coming their's no sense in continuing to call and only running the risk of spooking them.
