| Reid: 'Social Security is not part of the problem...' (Posted on 11/14/12 at 5:10 pm)
quote:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he will not allow changes in Social Security to be part of the negotiations to avoid a federal budget fiscal cliff, further narrowing the opportunities for savings that could be tapped to close the deficit. Republicans have insisted that big entitlement programs such as Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid be part of the end-of-year negotiations to head off tax-rate increases and the $110 billion in automatic spending cuts. … “Social Security is not part of the problem, That’s one of the myths the Republicans have tried to create,” he said. “Social Security is sound for the next many years. But we want to make sure that in the outer years people are protected also, but it’s not going to be part of the budget talks, as far as I’m concerned.” … “I’m giving you my personal feelings about where we need to go. Take care of the middle class and have the richest of the rich contribute a little bit to helping our economy,” he said.

Guy is an idiot. Medicare and Medicaid and out of control health care costs are a bigger problem, but SS is right there and needs reform as well. Raising the retirement age, means testing, raising the cap on contributions should all be on the table.

No, it's needs to be phased out completely. It was set up in the wake of a financial disaster and was never ran like it was sold to the public.

The problem is politicians like Harry Reid who are either too stupid to realize Social Security is a large part of the problem, or dishonest and willling to lie about our fiscal situation.

How this guy gets reelected is beyond me. I'm out in Nevada for business a lot and I haven't met one person who likes that guy.

But if we want to be realistic, you have to means test it, raise the retirement age, and phase some people out of eligibility all together. It's a shite proposition, but it's the only chance you have to reign in this portion of the deficit.

From the article in the link
quote:
On Wednesday the AARP released the results of a poll it took after last week's elections that it said showed most Americans 50 years of age and older don't want to see Social Security or Medicare included in the lame-duck negotiations.
Of course they don't. Nobody wants their check touched. Everybody is going to have to have their check, earned or not, touched for this too work.

Why oh why is there a cap on income for FICA? Tax all income and this will produce plenty of revenue to fund the program for all Americans.

If he were a Republican he would simply be called "an old white guy." That's seems to be the pejorative du jour.
