Thoughts?
I thought it was interesting to see the "yellow" states in '48 and '68.

Well roughly ever 16-24 years there is at least one major third party sometimes 2.

1) In 1948 the staunchly Democratic(Blue) South got angry with Democrats like Truman who formed A Civil Rights Commision to investigate Human Rights abuses against Blacks.
Truman also desegregated the military in 1948 & Northern Democrats like Hubert Humphrey called for an end to Jim Crow & a Civil Rights Act.
The South got pissed & started the DixieCrat party & nominated Strom Thurmond for PRESIDENT. Democratic party backtracked on Civil Rights legislation & the Southern Dixiecrats returned .
2) In 1968 Southhern Democrats got pissed again after Northern Democrats (JFK)finally decided to call for real Civil Rights Legislation,Pass Civil Rights legislation written by Northern Democrat(Emanuel Celler of NY) & signed ironically by a Southern Democratic President(LBJ).
That was the last straw & Southerrn Whites took their ball & left the Democratic Party 
The South would have been yellow in 1964, but the Civil Rights act was passed too close to election time (July)for a 3rd party challenge so they held their nose & voted for Barry Goldwater (who actually voted against the Civil Rights Act).
The GOP saw this dissatisfied /Angry Southern White Democrats & played the Southern Strategy & has basically owned the Southern White vote ever since.

Nothing any southerner has ever done has ever had anything to do with slavery, civil rights, or race in general. None of this secession talk is any more race-based than that of the 1860s or the 1960s.

By reading some things on this board about a certain group at about 10pm on 11-6 would tell you they LOVE african americans, blacks, hispanics, etc. They spoke nicely of minorities after Obama won.

 Let them keep putting their heads in the sand & pretend everything up to 1964 was about 'States Rights' & not preserving White supremacy.
Today the GOP ,who has adopted these same Southerners as their most reliable base ,is at a somewhat similiar crossroads with Hispanics.
Although the immigration issue is nowhere near as openly & intensely racist , violent nor bitter as the Black Civil Rights struggle it can certainly shape Hispanic views of the Parties for a long time.
They are certainly reinforcing Blacks general view of the GOP with their rhetoric against Hispanic immigrants.

Wonder why Bush, MCCain & logical Republicans agreed to bailouts this time around despite radicals saying let everything fail?

If FDR's moves were such a good idea then why did the Depression last another 10 years, since you are deemed "radical" to believe otherwise.
And those maps are pretty cool. The 'Island of California" is kind of interesting to see and states being added/switching. I'd like to see a flip book of it.
