What happened to the Ole Miss football program. I am old enough to remember some really great Lsu vs Ole Miss games around Halloween. Course i can also remember some really tight Lsu vs Tulane games at the end of each season. But to the point how did Ole Miss get to where they are and have been for so long. Is it school size? loss of Financial backing from the school to the football program? Bad coaching and thus bad recruiting? Curious about what caused the demise.

Clinging to the rebel/flag as a symbol/mascot had to have been great for recruiting.

Mississippi State is doing a great job of keeping the talent in state and away from Ole Miss. The rebel flag hasn't helped!

A few things:

1. They have not improved facilities like most other major programs in the country.

2. They can't get some of these MS kids to qualify academically.

3. It's a small state that they have to split with MState. Should be a one state school.

4. Constant racism from the students/alumni.

Other big schools raid the state's talent as well.

And USM - USM has gotten the best in-state recruits the last 30 years due to lower admission standards and the best fan base of the 3.

HAHAHAHAHAHA be realistic man USM has done a helluva job historically but they have by far the smallest and lest wealthy of the 3 in terms of fan base

Fan base isn't really relevant; Southern Miss was the best team in the state for about 2 decades (80's and 90's). You take that talent and put it in Oxford, and you have a hell of a lot better run than they ended up with.

yes they have. although their stadium isn't huge, the addition of suites & closing in of the south endzone are drastic upgrades. vaught-hemingway is not a bad stadium. it seems that many fans seem to think that a stadium is terrible unless it seats 90,000.
there are no bad seats, one of the nicest pressboxes & video screens in the sec, it's clean, and they installed field turn a few seasons back.
their indoor practice facility is extremely nice.

Constant racism from the students/alumni.

they've made strides. they've elected black student body presidents & recently had a black homecoming queen. prior to their kennedy, their previous two basketball coaches were black.
racism is at every school. i think it gets magnified more at ole miss because of the its past.

your other points are accurate.
i do hope they never rise above middle of the pack status.

This is coming from an LSU grad that grew up in MS. Small state with brighter lights on either side, and too much completion instate. And perceived racism aside, the culture is just screwy. Sooo clubby. There is not a public college in America where more pretense can be found, mostly unfounded. It was a turn off for me and I have family that went there. Ole Miss was a "Mommas boy" school to me growing up.

...there are no bad seats...

You've obviously never sat in the bleacher endzone seats.

Also, trhe open drainage ditch under the home team sideline that you have to navigate when going for concessions. Worst stadium in the SEC - worst I've ever beem to.

Have you sat in the south end zone? By that I mean LSU south end zone. It's pretty antiquated and crappy. At least ole miss still has the trough pissers so you can get in and out of bathroom quickly.

i have and had no problem seeing what was going on at the other end of the field. those seats are elevated enough that you can see.
the only thing that was bad about sitting there was having to turn around to see the replays.
still, it wasn't that much of an inconvenience.
there always has to be a worst. even so, it's still not a terrible venue like many try to make it seem.
