How is this decided? I know this is probably Germans, sorry! Just seems crazy for a 5 seed to go on the road to a 21 seed.

Higher seed in the first round.
In the regionals, if both higher seeds win, the higher seed gets the home game; if one high seed and one low seed win in the first round, the low seed gets the regional at home; if both low seeds win, the higher of the lows gets the home game.
It basically follows that pattern until the semis.
Eta: When I say "higher" seed, I meant higher power ranking.

not EXACTLY sure, but i do know that they try to get each team to play home games. so for the first round, the lower seed gets the home game. for the second game, if one team didn't have a home game, then they give it to them. so in this case, the 21 seed had a road game week 1, so they would have a home game week 2.
beyond that, i have no idea.

Any real reason why low seed is given home field?
Thx!!

I meant the team with the higher power ranking. They would be the "lower" seed.

reward for winning on the road
i believe the basic idea of it is to limit teams traveling two weeks in a row in the playoffs

Correct. Yet, it is possible for a team to play 3 straight home games if they are seeded high enough

First was a How question....Second was a why question. They are different.

In high school I was on a team that went semis in back to back years. We were the 1 seed both years. We went host, host, host, visitor junior year because the team we played in the semis traveled one time and we didn't. Senior year we visited in the quarters and hosted the semi.

Socialism
Spread the wealth...It's ridiculous really. You want a home game? Win more in the regular season against tougher opponents.

That's not how it works. If an underdog wins their game then they are rewarded with a home game UNLESS the next team they play was also an underdog and are ranked higher. If both favored teams win then the higher ranked team gets the home game.
Ex.
#1 (home) beats #32 (away)
and
#17(away) beats #10 (home)
then
#1 plays AT #17
If both #32(away) and #17(away) were to win then #17 gets the home game because they're ranked higher.
If the higher seeds (#1 & #10) both win then #1 gets the home game

A team can play every game at home if the higher seeds win every game on one half of the bracket. Parkview played all 4 games before the dome at home in 2007.

Sort of, yall are on the right track.
BUT, it all has to do with travel. If one team travels the previous week and one team is at home, the one at home is forced to travel.
If the teams have traveled the same number of times then the higher seed gets home field advantage.
So you have it right, but it's not "reward" the underdog, really. It's to ensure fairness in travel, because it's very expensive to put a team on the road for three straight weeks if you're seeded low and somehow keep winning.

Reward wasn't the best choice of verbiage. Sooner or later in the bracket using this system the home and away games become more balanced relatively speaking

John Curtis is traveling to North Webster... the rule is bullshite
Posted on 11/11/12 at 9:36 am to chalmetteowl
Those kids from north Webster got on yellow school buses and drove 5 hours to kinder this past week and won
Now you want to make the get back on those buses and drive the 7 hours to Nola?

bullshite x 10000000000000000000
A team busts its arse to earn a high seed and it has to play a second round game 7 hours away when it did nothing wrong. If the 23 seed wants to play at home, WIN YOUR DISTRICT.
imagine how ridiculous it would have been 2 years ago if the NFL would have given the 6 seed Packers the NFC Championship Game against the 2 seed Bears at home after they upset the Falcons. Just because the Packers didn't get to play at home yet and the Bears played at home the week before.
Or let the Giants play the 49ers at home last year as a "reward" for beating the Packers.
This is what the LHSAA does every week in the playoffs.
