The assumption was that he would get 5+ years. In that case they'll let him go.

Nobody expects him to sign a 3-year deal.

never was that their intentions... they just aren't going to give this guy a 5-6 year guaranteed type deal... they aren't going to compete with a club throwing that type of deal on table.

The article appears to tell the same story...

That pretty much is letting him go. Three years for an elite free agent is nothing. Sure, I'd sign him for three years, but it's extremely unlikely that will be a competitive offer.

Especially for one that is 31. Who is going to sign a 34 year old player with his baggage once that deal is up?

If you only consider the top 5 players in baseball elite then ok. Otherwise Hamilton is definitely an elite FA.

Hamilton is definitely elite. He just has way to much baggage for JD to offer anything over 3 years. At least that gives the team a cop out

Wasn't he named as a top 5 finalist for AL MVP? I know he has no shot of beating Cabrera or Trout, but that would put him close to elite FA status.

They figure offer that deal, if he takes it great. If someone wants to give him 5-6 yrs and leaves whatever

If C.J. Wilson was considered an elite FA last year, Josh is for sure elite.
Hell he's better than Prince Fielder and Fielder is "elite"
(I know Fielder doesn't have the baggage)
